Swimming classes at primary and secondary schools in Can Loc district (Ha Tinh) are contributing to practicing swimming skills, preventing drowning and creating a useful summer playground for students in the area.

At 3:00 p.m. every Monday to Saturday, children aged 6 and above gather at the swimming pool of Vuong Loc Primary School (Vuong Loc Commune) to participate in a swimming course organized by the school. This course has been implemented regularly by the school every summer since 2018. Each day consists of 2 shifts (from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.), each shift has about 15 students. Each swimming course has a total of 15 sessions with a tuition fee of 400,000 VND/student/course.
Not only is it a useful playground in the summer, coming to the course, children will learn swimming skills, physical training, and be equipped with methods to prevent drowning and safely rescue drowning people.
Swimming classes at Vuong Loc Primary School attract the participation of about 150 students in the area every summer.
“After letting my child join swimming classes, I see that he is more agile, bolder, has more friends and reduces the amount of time he spends watching TV and playing games on his phone like before,” shared Ms. To Thi Thuy (Ha Vang village, Vuong Loc commune).
It is known that after finishing the course at the school, the rate of students who know how to swim is over 80%. Some students who still do not know how to swim after finishing the course will continue to be trained and fully equipped with skills.
Mr. Hoang Dinh Thai - Principal of Vuong Loc Primary School said: "Every year, the school regularly coordinates with the police and commune health forces to promote drowning prevention during the school year and enroll students in swimming classes from the beginning of summer. On average, during each summer vacation, the school trains swimming skills for about 150 students in and out of school who want to learn to swim."
With an area of nearly 70 m2 , the swimming pool built by Gia Hanh Secondary School (Gia Hanh commune) has a total investment of more than 200 million VND supported by the People's Committee of Can Loc district and benefactors to be built and completed by the end of 2022. This summer, the school is promoting swimming teaching and learning for all students.
Faced with the increasing number of students registering for swimming lessons, right from the beginning of summer, the Board of Directors of Gia Hanh Secondary School opened 4 classes/day, divided into 2 shifts, morning and afternoon (each shift divided into 2 classes), and arranged 2 well-trained physical education teachers to teach. On average, each class lasts from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, with about 17-20 students/class.

The age group participating in swimming lessons at the school is from 6-15 years old, so the water level is always adjusted from 1-1.2m for the convenience of the children in learning. In addition, the water source in the swimming pool is taken from a drilled well, the water is changed daily to ensure cleanliness and avoid skin diseases for the students.
“I feel quite excited about learning to swim at school. In addition to being guided enthusiastically by teachers and given instructions on methods before getting into the water, I also get to meet friends and have an ideal swimming environment instead of going to lakes, dams, rivers and streams that pose a high risk of drowning,” said Phan Tri Thang, a 6th grader at Gia Hanh Secondary School.
Currently, a swimming course at Gia Hanh Secondary School costs 250,000-300,000 VND for 15 lessons. In addition, about 15 disadvantaged students have been listed by the school and arranged free classes to help them have an equal playing field and integrate with their friends.
In addition to being equipped with swimming skills, students are also instructed on how to safely rescue drowning people.
Can Loc district currently has 4 swimming pools, including 2 tarpaulin swimming pools at Vuong Loc Primary School and Khanh Vinh Yen Primary School, 2 swimming pools built at Gia Hanh Secondary School and Vu Diem Secondary School. These days, schools equipped with swimming pools are actively promoting the provision of swimming skills and methods to prevent drowning for students to minimize tragic drowning incidents.
Swimming courses not only help improve swimming skills but also create a useful summer playground, helping students have an environment to practice physical strength, socialize with friends and stay away from useless games and social evils.
The Department of Education and Training has requested schools in the district to regularly promote, mobilize, and support students to participate in swimming practice, prevent drowning, etc. It requires schools that have been built and equipped with swimming pools to fully utilize their functions and efficiency in teaching swimming to students; increase the organization of swimming classes and swimming lessons to create the most favorable conditions for everyone to learn to swim, especially children and students. In addition, there must be policies to support and help children from families with difficult circumstances to learn to swim.
