A scholarship from the British government and British universities has just announced it is open for applications, with 10 spots available for Vietnamese people and this number has increased steadily in recent years.
This afternoon, December 24, the British Council officially announced the opening of applications for the GREAT 2025 scholarship. The scholarship program for graduate students in 18 countries including Vietnam is co-sponsored by the British Council, the UK government's GREAT Britain campaign and participating UK universities.
According to the British Council, each scholarship is worth a minimum of £10,000 (VND320 million) for one-year postgraduate study programs in the UK in the 2025-2026 academic year. Students applying for the scholarship must have an offer of admission from one of the participating universities and meet all entry requirements for the chosen course as prescribed by each university.
This year, 10 schools in the UK are collaborating with the program to award 10 scholarships to Vietnamese students, including City University (under the University of London), Cranfield, Edge Hill, Manchester, Ulster, Aberdeen, Bradford, Bristol, St Andrews, and York. Notably, this year the campaign has added 3 more scholarships for Vietnamese people, and the current number of scholarships is 3 times higher than the first year of implementation.
Specifically, in 2021, when the GREAT scholarship was first launched, there were only 3 scholarships for Vietnam and this number remained in 2022. By 2023, the number of scholarships doubled to 6 and then the program continued to increase by one more scholarship in 2024, a representative of the British Council confirmed to Thanh Nien . To date, Vietnam has had a total of 19 scholars studying in the UK under the GREAT scholarship program.
"With more than 3,200 Vietnamese students studying at university level in the UK each year, the GREAT scholarship will contribute to building a close cooperation relationship between the UK and Vietnam in the field of higher education, and is a testament to the UK's continued and always ready to welcome all Vietnamese students," said Mr. James Shipton, Director of the British Council in Vietnam.
According to the British Council, to help candidates learn more about the scholarship program, this unit will organize an online sharing session on January 9, 2025 with the participation of representatives of British universities and students who have received this scholarship in 2022.
