AFP reported that the Imperial Household Agency (IHA) account was made public last week but was set to private until April 1. The account has more than 160,000 followers. However, this account does not follow any other accounts.
According to AFP , the first 19 posts of the Japanese Royal Family on Instagram are photos and videos of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako performing royal duties during recent events.
An IHA spokesperson confirmed that by engaging with social media, the organisation hopes to attract younger generations' interest in what the royal family does.
Reacting to the Japanese royal family joining Instagram, one social media user wrote: "The royal family is on Instagram. I thought it was an April Fool's joke."
Another shared: "When I found out the royal family had an Instagram account, I quickly checked."
Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne in 2019 in a ceremony steeped in tradition after his father abdicated.
Around the world , other royal families also use social media accounts, such as the British royal family.
