The quality of overseas Vietnamese has improved, but Viettel The Cong Club still says no.
Coach Duc Thang puts his trust in the young generation of Viettel The Cong Club
In the 2024-2025 season, VPF will allow football teams to register 2 overseas Vietnamese (who do not yet have Vietnamese citizenship). This will not only help clubs improve the quality of their squads and increase competitiveness, but can also make the "wave" of overseas Vietnamese returning home stronger, and further contribute good players to the Vietnamese national team. However, Viettel The Cong Club affirms that it will remain outside this trend.
In fact, the level of overseas Vietnamese players in the V-League has gradually improved in recent seasons. Nguyen Filip quickly asserted his class at the Hanoi Police Club (CAHN), and is competing for the starting position with Dang Van Lam (also an overseas Vietnamese) in the Vietnam national team.
Patrik Le Giang is a solid stopper for Ho Chi Minh City FC, the best goalkeeper in V-League 2023-2024. Adriano Schmidt maintains a relatively stable performance and is also playing a key role in the "Red Battleship". Even V-League rookies such as Jason Pendant Quang Vinh (CAHN FC), Adou Leygley Minh (Ha Tinh FC) have made a strong impression.

After Doan Van Hau's injury, CAHN FC has a new top-class left-back. Against Hai Phong FC, Jason Quang Vinh made many situations of climbing the sidelines, skillfully passing people and had 2 accurate crosses for his teammates. Before that, in the 2-1 victory over Buriram United in the ASEAN Club Championship, the French-Vietnamese player also played well.
Adou Minh made an even stronger impression. Against the reigning V-League champions Nam Dinh, he locked down Joseph Mpande, repeatedly relieved goalkeeper Thanh Tung and scored the decisive goal to help Ha Tinh FC win 1-0.
Coach Nguyen Duc Thang of Viettel The Cong Club affirmed: “This season, V-League has more quality overseas Vietnamese players. Using this resource is also a good thing.” However, this strategist said that the military team has no plans to recruit overseas Vietnamese players.
The pride of Viettel The Cong Club
Thanh Binh is growing up to follow in the footsteps of captain Bui Tien Dung.
Coach Duc Thang shared: “The Cong Viettel is a place to train young people, contributing a lot to the national team. That is the reason why we do not welcome overseas Vietnamese players. The team only uses self-trained players, young players with potential who are playing for the U.20 or U.23 Vietnam teams have potential.”
This season, Viettel The Cong Club registered many players of the U.23 age group such as Khuat Van Khang, Dang Tuan Phong, Nguyen Hong Phuc (2003), Nguyen Huu Thai Bao (2004), Nguyen Manh Hung, Nguyen Dang Duong (2005), Nguyen Cong Phuong (2006). Besides Van Khang who has played for the national team, the remaining names are all members of the youth teams from U.17, U.20 to U.23 Vietnam.
Youth training is a tradition of Viettel The Cong Club. During the most glorious years of Vietnamese football, the army team contributed a lot. Bui Tien Dung was a pillar in the historic journey at the 2018 U.23 Asian Cup, 2018 AFF Cup and 2019 Asian Cup. Following that, Duc Chien, Hoang Duc, Thanh Binh, Tuan Tai, Manh Dung won the gold medals of SEA Games 30 and 31 with the Vietnam U.22 team.
Coach Duc Thang is satisfied with the performance of the young players in the opening match of V-League 2024 - 2025
Not to mention the youth teams of Viettel The Cong Club often go deep in national youth tournaments. Among them, the most impressive achievement is the 2020 national U.21 championship with the generation of Nguyen Thanh Binh, Tran Danh Trung, Nham Manh Dung... They are all people who coach Nguyen Duc Thang has high expectations for.
It is clear that Viettel The Cong Club creates a sense of succession. For example, after Bui Tien Dung, they have Duc Chien, Hoang Duc, and later Thanh Binh, then Khuat Van Khang. Young players will compete and train with their seniors and will learn many things, from on the field to professional life.
That is also the reason why coach Nguyen Duc Thang is determined to give opportunities to "homegrown" players in the season when Viettel The Cong Club aims to win the championship. Although the opening match could not get 3 points (a 0-0 draw with Ho Chi Minh City Club at Thong Nhat Stadium), Mr. Thang still has faith in his students.
He praised his young players: “I understand the quality of the players trained by Viettel The Cong Club. They are suitable for the way I build tactics and playing style in V-League. In recent times, the young players have all made progress.”
