In 2024, the residual thermal power plants of the two Hoa Phat Iron and Steel Production Complexes in Hai Duong and Dung Quat will have a total electricity output of 3.18 billion kWh, an increase of 29% over the same period, helping Hoa Phat to be self-sufficient in over 90% of electricity for production. Particularly in Dung Quat, on February 5, 2025, the Thermal Power Plant - Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Company officially reached the cumulative electricity output milestone since its operation to date of 10 billion kWh, contributing to optimizing production costs.
Hoa Phat to reach 3.18 billion kWh of electricity generation in 2024
In the past year, Hoa Phat Dung Quat's self-generated electricity output reached 2.39 billion kWh, self-sufficient in more than 90% of the steel production needs of the entire Complex. The self-generated electricity output supplied to the Hoa Phat Hai Duong Steel Complex reached 788 million kWh. The total self-generated electricity output of Hoa Phat at the two complexes of Hai Duong and Dung Quat is equivalent to a medium-sized thermal power plant. Converted according to current electricity prices, the electricity generation output in 2024 is worth about 5,400 billion VND.
Recovering and using excess heat and gas to generate electricity is an effective solution to save energy, increase competitiveness in product prices, minimize environmental pollution, and reduce pressure on the national power grid.
Hoa Phat's iron and steel complexes are invested with modern equipment lines from G7 countries to help optimize production, take advantage of all heat sources and excess gas in the iron and steel smelting process to improve power generation efficiency, save production costs, and develop sustainably.
Currently, Hoa Phat is applying 5 energy-saving steel production solutions.
The first solution is to recover excess heat, hot gas from coke ovens, blast furnaces, and blast furnaces to produce electricity. Excess heat generated from the coke production process and excess gas from the iron and steel smelting process are recovered and used to generate electricity for production.
Second is to use environmentally friendly dry cup extinguishing technology to generate electricity.
Third is the Blast Furnace Fan Recycling Turbine (BPRT) technology, which operates high-capacity fans, saving up to 50% of electricity consumption compared to traditional methods.
Fourth is to use excess heat to generate electricity during the ore sintering process.
The fifth is Continuous Casting and Rolling technology, utilizing heat from hot billets, hot billets after casting with a temperature of 750-900 degrees Celsius will be immediately transferred to the rolling line to produce finished steel. This solution has minimized energy use, reduced production costs, and reduced CO2 emissions per ton of product.
