TPO - The increase in electricity usage will lead to higher electricity bills for Ho Chi Minh City residents in March than previous months. It is forecasted that electricity consumption will continue to increase and set new records in April and May.

On the afternoon of March 28, at a press conference providing information on socio-economic issues in the area, Mr. Bui Trung Kien - Deputy General Director of Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation (EVNHCMC) said that according to weather rules, Ho Chi Minh City will have peak heat in the second quarter, with temperatures at many times reaching over 37-40 degrees Celsius, and the number of hot hours during the day is also higher, even at night. Therefore, customers' demand for electricity also increases, mainly due to the use of more cooling and heating devices, especially air conditioners.

As of March 26, the average consumption output in Ho Chi Minh City reached 78.13 million kWh/day, 12% higher (equivalent to 8.38 million kWh/day) than the same period in 2023 due to increased ambient temperature.

Mr. Kien added that the electricity bills of households in March will increase sharply because statistics from EVNHCMC show that the percentage of customers using electricity price step 6 increased by more than 30%. Meanwhile, in previous months, only about 20% of the total of more than 2.6 million customers in the city.

"The increase in electricity usage will lead to higher electricity bills in March than previous months," said Mr. Kien.

According to the representative of EVNHCMC, in the first two months of 2024, electricity consumption of residential customers (accounting for 49.55% of total output) increased by 11.9%, much stronger than that of non-residential customers (increased by 7.32%; accounting for 50.45% of total load). In the non-residential customer group, electricity consumption of the industrial and construction group (accounting for 29.49% of total output) also increased by 6.2%.

This shows that the city's economy is recovering and growing. At the same time, household customers have increasingly used more electrical equipment, especially cooling equipment. Therefore, during the hot season, the electricity consumption of household customers continuously increases.

In El-Nino conditions, the heat will last longer and temperatures will continue to rise as forecast, so the city's electricity consumption will continue to increase in April and May.

"It is forecasted that there will be some days when electricity consumption will exceed 95 million kWh/day, setting a new record for electricity consumption in Ho Chi Minh City," said Mr. Kien.

The Ho Chi Minh City power system has a reserve capacity of 40-60% depending on the voltage level. Therefore, this agency will have enough capacity to meet the load demand of Ho Chi Minh City under all growth scenarios. However, it is not excluded that local overloads, small in scope, will occur due to sudden increase in demand at the same time.
