Located about two hours away from Hanoi, Sam Tang Lake in Thanh Son Commune, Mai Chau District is the highest mountain lake in Hoa Binh Province. The lake has a cool green landscape and fresh climate, but not many people know about it. Surrounding it are bowl-shaped grass hills, creating green grasslands surrounding the lake.
The lake is located in Thanh Son commune, formerly known as Noong Luong commune, Mai Chau district, at an altitude of 1,280 m above sea level, and is home to the Thai and Muong ethnic groups in the region.

From Hanoi, Chu Duc Giang, 30 years old, went to Mai Chau, Hoa Binh by limousine for about 200,000 - 250,000 VND per person. There are no motorbike taxis from the bus station to Noong Luong village, visitors can call a taxi.
For more convenience, Mr. Giang recommends that tourists use personal vehicles. When passing through Thung Khe, tourists can see the wild natural scenery and feel the cool air from the forests stretching on both sides.

On the way to the lake, Mr. Giang passed through an S-shaped road located halfway up the grassy hills. The lake is located at the foot of the hill, visitors can find a place to park along the road and walk about 5-7 minutes down to the lake to enjoy the scenery.

Sam Tang Lake is considered the "rough gem" of Hoa Binh, about 2.7 hectares wide. The lake surface is calm, the water is clear all year round, reflecting the grassy hills along the lake.
Before 1973, the lake was just a large stream. Due to agricultural production needs, Mai Chau district at that time mobilized young people to work as laborers to build a dam. The lake became the main source of water for daily life and irrigation for 400 hectares of agricultural land in the commune, according to the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion of Hoa Binh province.

According to Mr. Giang, tourists should visit the lake in the afternoon, when the sun is nice. In addition to taking photos, tourists can bring things for picnics and camping. The lake is quite deep, so tourists should not go swimming. Around 5 p.m., tourists can watch the sunset at the lake or turn back to watch the clouds on the way back.

Sam Tang Lake is a place for a relaxing weekend with friends and family. Tourism is not yet developed here, and there are few attractions, accommodation, and entertainment services. Therefore, visitors will have more time to immerse themselves in nature and be "healed" among the green of trees and grass.

Within a 2 km radius of the lake, there are several homestays, priced at 700,000 VND - 1,000,000 VND per room per night. Visitors can stay overnight here and then visit Thung waterfall, Quyet Chien commune, Tan Lac district - about 18 km from the lake or Lac village, nearly 30 km away.
Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, owner of a homestay near Sam Tang Lake, said that Sam Tang Lake has only become known to many people since the beginning of this year through photos and videos posted by tourists on social media. He suggested that visitors should come here in the summer to feel the change in climate from low to high, avoid the heat and enjoy the peaceful space.

Although the purpose of the trip was to see the lake, Mr. Giang was surprised to be able to watch the clouds and sunset from the space behind the homestay. In the evening, thin white clouds rolled up, covering the landscape, under the orange-yellow sunlight at the end of the day. The scenery was "just as beautiful as Ta Xua or Sa Pa", and the cost was cheaper, about 1.5 million VND per person, Mr. Giang said.
