And then, as if history were repeating itself in a strange way, Ruben Amorim's side produced an incredible comeback at Old Trafford, scoring three goals in just seven minutes of extra time to win 5-4 against Lyon. The Red Devils advanced to the Europa League semi-finals with a 7-6 aggregate score after two matches.

It was a crazy night at Old Trafford. United were 2-0 down, then levelled at 2-2, then Lyon - down to 10 men after Corentin Tolisso's red card - stormed back to a 4-2 lead in extra time. But in the chaos, the Red Devils refused to surrender.

United's comeback began with a Bruno Fernandes penalty. Kobbie Mainoo came off the bench to level the score at 4-4, before Harry Maguire headed home a late winner to seal a 5-4 victory, capping off a magical night at the Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking after the match, coach Amorim revealed: “I watched the 1999 documentary to find inspiration for moments like this. It was a great night. My players were exhausted, trailing 4-2 despite having an extra man. Everyone thought it was over. But at Old Trafford, there is never such a thing as ‘over’. Here, anything can happen."

The Amazon Prime documentary “99” chronicles Manchester United’s historic treble-winning journey under Sir Alex Ferguson, which ended with a dramatic 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final, with Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scoring twice in stoppage time to seal the title and complete the historic treble.

Coach Amorim said emotionally: "The sound at Old Trafford tonight was the best sound I have ever heard. Some people like to collect shirts, but I want to keep that sound - the best sound in the world ".

“I feel sorry for those who left the pitch at 4-2, just because of traffic jams,” said coach Amorim. “We know we played below our potential, and deserve criticism. But there is still time to create something special for this season.”

In the Europa League semi-finals, MU will face Athletic Bilbao - the team that beat Rangers with a total score of 2-0.
