Coach Kim Sang Sik eliminated Van Lam, finalizing the list of Vietnam team participating in AFF Cup

(Dan Tri) - This afternoon (December 5), head coach Kim Sang Sik finalized the list of 26 players for the Vietnamese team to participate in the Southeast Asian Championship (AFF Cup 2024). Unfortunately, veteran goalkeeper Dang Van Lam was eliminated.

The Vietnam national team has officially announced the list of 26 players participating in the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship (AFF 2024). After training in Korea, coach Kim Sang Sik eliminated 7 players from the preliminary list of 33 before leaving for the first match of the AFF Cup group stage. The names that had to say goodbye include goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, midfielder Phan Van Duc, Nguyen Van Truong, Tran Bao Toan, Nguyen Thai Son, and strikers Nguyen Dinh Bac and Nguyen Quoc Viet.

Among the eliminated players, the case of goalkeeper Dang Van Lam is the most regrettable as he did not recover from his injury in time. Van Lam has been the number one goalkeeper of the Vietnamese team for many years, contributing to the championship of the AFF Cup 2018 and the runner-up of the AFF Cup 2022.

The other players eliminated, except for Phan Van Duc and Tran Bao Toan who are over 23 years old, are all promising young talents. Participating in the training session with the national team is a valuable opportunity for them to gain experience for major tournaments such as the 2026 AFC U23 Qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games in 2025.

Tonight (December 5), three players of Nam Dinh Club including defender Nguyen Van Vi, striker Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Van Toan will join the national team after completing their mission in the 2024-25 AFC Champions League Two Group Stage.

Tomorrow morning (December 6), the Vietnamese team will leave for Laos to prepare for the opening match in Group B. The match with the Lao team will take place at 8:00 p.m. on December 9 at the Laos National Stadium.

At the 2024 AFF Cup, the Vietnamese team is in Group B, along with Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines. After the opening match in Laos, the Vietnamese team will rest in the second match (December 12). In the third match, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team will host Indonesia (December 15, Phu Tho Stadium). In the fourth match, the Vietnamese team will play in the Philippines (December 18). In the final match of the group stage, the Vietnamese team will host Myanmar (December 21, Phu Tho Stadium).

The 2024 AFF Cup group stage consists of 2 groups, competing in a round-robin format for points in each group, each team has one home match alternating with one away match (total of 2 home matches, 2 away matches). The first and second teams in each group will enter the semi-finals. The semi-finals and finals of the AFF Cup will compete in a home and away format to find the champion.
