This friendly marked the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between England and Scotland. England took an early 2-0 lead in the first half through Foden and Bellingham. In the second half, centre-back Maguire scored an own goal in the 67th minute after trying to block a pass from Andy Robertson. At the end of the match, striker Harry Kane scored the winning goal for England, 3-1.
"To be honest, Maguire has been treated ridiculously for a long time. What he has shown is full of effort. But the consequences of unnecessary criticism have sunk his career. It's like a joke," coach Gareth Southgate responded, after Maguire scored an own goal and continued to be fiercely attacked by the British press.
"I've never seen a player treated like that. Not by the Scottish fans, but by our football pundits and commentators. Whatever it is, they always create something beyond anything I've ever seen, to criticise Maguire so badly.
He has been a solid and important factor, contributing to the success of the England team over the past 10 years. Maguire always plays with resilience. Therefore, we always stand by Maguire in all situations," coach Gareth Southgate shared.
