The incident occurred after Northville High School lost 37-43 to La Fargeville in the New York Public High School Athletic Association Class D finals.

At that time, Northville female player Hailey Monroe was standing talking with her teammates when coach Jim Zullo (Northville) came up behind Monroe and pulled her hair.

The 81-year-old coach also shouted at his player before other Northville staff intervened. This moment was later posted on social media and caused public outrage.

Jim Zullo tried to defend his actions, telling NEWS10 ABC that Monroe insulted him after he asked her to shake his opponent's hand and that's when things got out of hand. But whatever the case, Jim Zullo's actions were unacceptable and he was immediately fired.

Jim Zullo is a very famous basketball coach, who was inducted into the New York City Hall of Fame.

Mr. Zullo later publicly apologized to the press for his actions: "I want to send my most sincere apologies to Hailey Monroe and her family, and all members of our team. As a coach, there is no situation in which I am allowed to lay a hand on a player and I am truly sorry."
