Ke Go Lake is an important national reservoir. This large irrigation project was built in 1976 on the Rao Cai River basin (in Cam Xuyen District, Ha Tinh) and was completed and put into operation in 1983.
The lake has a capacity of nearly 400 million m3 , a basin area of up to 223 km2 , and an elevation of nearly 40 m. In addition to serving irrigation, this hydraulic project also has the function of slowing down floods in downstream areas.
Ke Go Lake seen from above
Currently, due to prolonged hot weather and no rain, the water level in the lake is very low, even some areas in the lake have dried up, causing difficulties in operating irrigation services for the downstream area.
According to the Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited (the management unit of Ke Go Lake), the current water level in the lake has dropped to only 45 million m3 and is close to the dead water level. However, irrigation for the summer-autumn rice crop in the downstream area has basically been completed, so there will be no shortage of water for irrigation in the fields.
Images of Ke Go Lake drying up that Thanh Nien recorded in recent days:
The lake has a capacity of nearly 400 million cubic meters but now only has 45 million cubic meters left.
Prolonged dry weather without rain is the reason why the water level in Ke Go Lake is low.
Water level recedes from the main dam slope
Many areas in Ke Go Lake have dried up bottom.
The oases in the lake become larger as the water recedes.
The bottom of the main dam slope is exposed when Ke Go lake dries up.
Many places in the lake have dried up water and exposed bottom.
Fish carcasses appear sporadically in the lake.
People even ride motorbikes in the lake area near the main dam foot.
The low water level of Ke Go Lake causes difficulties in irrigation operations.
In summer, the water level in Ke Go Lake is often low but not as dry as this year.
