Taking advantage of his family's 1.5 hectares of rubber, Mr. Ho Van Giang in Hamlet 1, Dong No Commune, Hon Quan District raises 6,000 Grimaud ducks. This is a super lean duck breed, grows very quickly, and takes a shorter time to raise than other duck breeds. After about 42-45 days of raising, the ducks reach a weight of 3.3-3.5 kg/duck and can be sold. "I have raised ducks for 5 years and find the economic efficiency very good. I raise 30,000 ducks/year, with a profit of about 500 million VND after deducting expenses. I find that raising Grimaud ducks is more economically efficient than raising chickens and other animals," said Mr. Giang.
Also taking advantage of the area under the rubber canopy, Mr. Ho Van Dong's family in Hamlet 5, Dong No Commune raises 4,000 Grimaud ducks, bringing in a profit of about 400 million VND each year. Mr. Dong said that Grimaud ducks are easier to raise than other duck breeds, have good adaptability, can withstand rain and wind, are less susceptible to diseases, eat well, have a low loss rate of only about 2-3% and are uniform and easy to sell. "Previously, ducks were raised in sunny cashew gardens with lakes, so the ducks swam a lot and ate less, so they grew slowly. Raising ducks in cool rubber plots makes them grow faster and the raising time is shorter," Mr. Dong shared.
Mr. Ho Van Giang checks the ducks ready for sale.
These are 2 of 5 members of Dong No Agricultural Cooperative who are developing their economy by raising Grimaud super lean ducks in rubber plantations. On average, each year, cooperative members sell more than 150,000 ducks. With the current price ranging from 42,000-45,000 VND/kg, each duck brings in a profit of about 10,000 VND for the breeder.
According to Mr. Duong Truyen Thong, Director of Dong No Agricultural Cooperative, ducklings are brooded indoors for about 20 days before being released into the rubber plantation. At this time, the ducks' resistance is very good, and they are exposed to the soil, so they are less likely to get sick. Every 5-10 days, the farm owner moves the duck coop to another place to clean it so that the ducks do not get sick. Regarding the market, the price of Grimaud ducks has been stable for the past 3 years, so farmers have made a profit. Especially when raising ducks in rubber plantations, gardeners do not have to fertilize the plants, but the amount of latex is greater.
Raising Grimaud ducks is one of the models of getting rich in rural areas from agriculture. Taking advantage of the area under the rubber canopy helps reduce the cost of housing, raising large numbers while still isolating the outside environment. The dual benefits of harvesting rubber latex and raising ducks bring a better life to farming households. Currently, the model is being replicated by other members of Dong No Agricultural Cooperative and people in the commune.
