The Krong Pach Upper Reservoir Project Phase 1 was started in 2010, with a total investment of over VND4,400 billion, aiming to provide irrigation water for 14,900 hectares of agricultural land and domestic water for nearly 73,000 people.

This is a large-scale project, highly technical and complex, with a large volume of site clearance, wide scope, and long implementation time due to many objective and subjective reasons.

However, with the high political determination of the central and local ministries and branches, especially the consensus and unanimity of the people whose land was recovered, the project was officially inaugurated in the historic month of April - the occasion when the whole country joyfully celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification.

The project not only contributes to changing people's lives but is also a concrete step to realize policies and orientations for sustainable agricultural and rural development in the Central Highlands.

The completion of the Upper Krong Pach Reservoir Project will contribute to ensuring water security for daily life and production.

According to Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thien Van, the construction of the Upper Krong Pach Reservoir is not only the aspiration of the ethnic minorities in Dak Lak province but also the aspiration of many generations of local leaders over the years. It is believed that the project's water source will be brought to arid lands, villages and will create a new rich and beautiful rural area.

Ms. Sung Thi Hoa - one of the households whose land was acquired for this project shared that her family used to live in the lake area in village 13, Cu San commune (M'Drắk district). After giving up the land to implement the project, her family moved to the resettlement area in Cu Bong commune (Ea Kar district). In her new place, she is very satisfied with the electricity, roads, schools, and stations. However, she and hundreds of households in this resettlement area hope that the government will soon arrange land for farming and rice cultivation so that people can stabilize their production and lives in the new land.

Minister of Agriculture and Environment Do Duc Duy said that Dak Lak province is not only the "capital" of coffee in Vietnam but also a land with great potential for agricultural development such as livestock, forestry, fruit trees, eco-tourism and renewable energy. However, in recent times, the province's sustainable agricultural development has encountered many difficulties. In particular, the impact of climate change is increasingly evident, prolonged drought, unusually heavy rains causing floods, landslides... have caused severe damage to agricultural production, greatly affecting the lives and incomes of people. In particular, the Southeast region of the province including 4 districts: Ea Kar, Krong Pac, M'Drak and Krong Bong is one of the most severely affected areas.

Phase 1 of the Krong Pach Thuong Reservoir Project has completed the construction of the canal system, with a total length of more than 63 km.

In the context of climate change, water resource depletion and sustainable livelihood challenges in the Central Highlands, the construction of the Upper Krong Pach Reservoir is of strategic significance.

Phase 1 of the project not only provides stable domestic water for people but also serves production, livestock and economic activities to improve people's lives; reduces floods and inundation in downstream areas, protects production infrastructure and residents; creates tourist landscapes, regulates climate, develops aquaculture, improves people's quality of life in the project area; contributes to ensuring water security and food security for the entire Central Highlands region.
