New public transport system in Cat Ba: A step forward for green tourism

Accordingly, the electric car will pick up visitors from Phu Long cable car station to Green Island Central Bay. The electric car schedule operates from early morning to late evening, synchronized with the Sun World Cat Ba cable car schedule and events at Green Island Central Bay City, helping visitors easily arrange their travel, experience and entertainment schedules.

During the free trial period (April 18–May 15, 2025), 10 electric cars running the Phu Long cable car station – Green Island Central Bay route will operate continuously to pick up and drop off visitors. From May 16, 2025, the system will expand to 20 cars of each type, with a frequency of 150 trips/day, meeting peak season demand. Visitors taking the cable car can easily park their personal vehicles at the Cat Hai station parking lot of Sun World Cat Ba. The Sun World Cat Ba cable car ticket price is currently still on sale at only 50,000 VND/one-way passenger (valid until December 31, 2025).

Also in May, the new electric buggy is expected to be put into operation by the unit to take tourists from Cat Ba marina (Dong Ho Bay) to the central bay of Xanh Island, or move flexibly to the beach and tourist attractions within Xanh Island.

In parallel, two new high-speed ferry routes will add more waterway transport options for passengers, helping to shorten travel time. The Cat Hai - Cat Ba route (25 minutes) will operate from April 18, taking passengers from Cat Hai marina (next to Dong Bai ferry terminal) to Cat Ba marina (Dong Ho Bay). The Ha Long - Cat Ba route (50 minutes) will operate from May 17, 2025, departing from Ha Long International Passenger Port to Cat Ba marina (Dong Ho Bay).

To facilitate tourists to have a convenient place to park their vehicles before the speedboat arrives at the island, the Management Board of Cat Hai Marina Parking Lot (next to Dong Bai Ferry Terminal) said that the parking lot here is being upgraded with a roof and a modern technology management system.

Cat Ba is witnessing remarkable tourism growth thanks to a variety of discovery experiences. In the first two months of 2025, the "Pearl Island of the North" welcomed more than 280,000 visitors. However, the transport infrastructure has not kept up with the growth rate. At the "bottleneck" of Dong Bai ferry terminal, there is often a prolonged congestion. At times, the number of passengers waiting for the ferry is several kilometers long, causing inconvenience to tourists as well as local people. On the island, the number of private vehicles and passenger cars has increased dramatically while the existing public transport is not enough to meet the demand, reducing the quality of the experience and putting pressure on the environment.

Sun Group's introduction of a carbon-free public transport system to serve tourists is expected to gradually remove traffic bottlenecks. At the same time, limiting the use of personal gasoline and diesel vehicles on the island is also important to help protect the environment, raise people's awareness of environmental protection, and gradually position Cat Ba as the first green, ecological, carbon-free island in Vietnam. Research by EDF - the UK's Integrated Energy Agency shows that an electric car can reduce about 1.5 million grams of CO2 in more than 1 year.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong (from Nam Dinh), one of the first tourists to experience the electric car route, shared: “It only takes a few minutes from the cable car station to the center of the island, I can enjoy the sea and forest scenery without worrying about waiting in line to get on and off the bus. The electric car is new, clean, modern, and free. This will definitely make a good impression on tourists, especially foreign tourists, and they will no longer have to worry about how to get to the island.”

In 2025, Cat Ba sets a target of attracting 4 million visitors. The new Ladies Beach will officially open on the occasion of April 30, stretching nearly 1km with thousands of coconut trees, the show " Symphony of the Green Island " - Symphony of the Green Island from May 23 with a scale of nearly 200 billion, promising to bring an unprecedented experience. VUI-Fest night market with 36 environmentally friendly stalls will also be launched, creating a rich cultural and night entertainment space.
