Major health consequences
Ms. TVK (35 years old, residing in Ho Chi Minh City) is a typical example of someone who used weight-loss products of unknown origin. She is 1.55 meters tall, weighs 80 kg, and was found to have high cholesterol, fatty liver, and sleep disorders. She bought weight-loss tea from an acquaintance hoping to lose weight quickly without changing her diet or exercise routine.
Initially, Ms. TVK experienced some symptoms such as mild diarrhea and fatigue. However, she thought these were signs that the medication was working. After 6 days of using the weight-loss tea, she lost 3 kg, but the diarrhea became more severe (up to 10 times a day). Furthermore, she felt dizzy, her skin wrinkled, and she felt very weak. When she fainted in the bathroom, her family had to take her to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for emergency treatment. There, doctors diagnosed her with acute kidney failure and severe hypotension due to dehydration.
Ms. TVK's case is one of many cases that doctors at medical facilities have encountered recently related to the use of weight-loss products of unknown origin, causing serious health consequences. Specialist doctors say that many weight-loss teas and medications on the market have unclear ingredients and can cause diarrhea, dehydration, leading to acute kidney failure, hypotension, or other serious digestive problems. These products promise rapid weight loss but do not provide sustainable results. Instead, they can cause skin discoloration, wrinkles, fatigue, and, more seriously, damage internal organs such as kidney failure.
Losing weight too quickly without medical supervision can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients, causing physical exhaustion and even serious health problems.
Ms. MT (29 years old, residing in Binh Duong ) is also an unfortunate case of someone who applied an excessive weight loss method. With the goal of losing 15 kg in two months, she only ate breakfast and lunch, and drank smoothies instead of dinner. After a week, she lost 2 kg, but felt tired and unable to concentrate. By the second week, despite losing another 2 kg, she began to feel weak in her limbs, had difficulty breathing, and had to be hospitalized. Doctors diagnosed her with hypoglycemia and acute kidney failure. “At first, I felt proud of my rapid weight loss, but I never expected my body to become so tired and short of breath. I couldn’t imagine I had reached the point of kidney failure,” Ms. MT said.
Be cautious of advertisements.
Losing weight too quickly without medical supervision can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients, causing physical exhaustion and even serious health problems such as acute kidney failure, electrolyte imbalance, and hypotension. For effective and safe weight loss, doctors recommend scientifically-based methods, including a combination of dietary adjustments, regular exercise, and the use of approved weight-loss medications. These weight-loss products must be FDA (USA) or EMA (Europe) certified and guaranteed for quality.
Dr. Lam Van Hoang, Director of the Center for Weight Control and Obesity Treatment (Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City), advises that unscientific weight loss methods such as fasting or using unregulated weight loss products can cause serious health consequences, ranging from kidney failure and hypoglycemia to skin and digestive problems.
"Weight loss is not something that can be achieved in a short time, but rather a long process that requires medical intervention to ensure safety. Using products of unknown origin can lead to unpredictable complications. Furthermore, losing weight too quickly will prevent the body from adapting, making it easy to regain weight and causing many other co-existing health problems," warned Dr. Lam Van Hoang.
According to Mr. Hoang, the weight loss process must be gradual and tailored to each individual's health condition. A single weight loss method cannot be applied to everyone. Using weight loss medication under medical supervision will help regulate eating habits and achieve sustainable results. A suitable diet and gentle exercises such as walking, yoga, or exercises that can be done at home are also recommended by experts. These methods help reduce fat safely, especially visceral fat – a cause of many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoarthritis.
Doctors generally agree that weight loss cannot happen in a short period of time and requires the support of a professional medical team. In particular, reducing visceral fat needs careful management to avoid the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or cancer. For effective and sustainable weight loss, patients need a well-planned weight loss regimen, combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
In fact, losing 5-15% of body weight in about 6 months is a feasible goal and offers many health benefits, while also reducing the risk of comorbidities. However, to achieve long-term weight loss without side effects, it is crucial that patients follow a scientific approach and are closely monitored by healthcare professionals.
Finally, experts advise that people should be extremely cautious about advertisements promising "miracle" weight loss, "no exercise required," or "instant weight loss" from unknown sources. These methods can have unpredictable consequences for health.
