According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first half of this year, our country exported more than 353,500 tons of cashew nuts, a sharp increase of 26.2% over the same period last year; the revenue value was nearly 1.95 billion USD, an increase of 18.7%.

On the other hand, taking advantage of the low prices, businesses spent 1.8 billion USD to import nearly 1.5 million tons of cashew nuts. Compared to the same period last year, cashew imports increased by 8.4% in volume, while the value only increased slightly by 3.4%.

Cambodia is the largest source of cashew nuts for Vietnam. In just half a year, over 780,700 tons of cashew nuts from this country were imported into Vietnam, worth up to 1 billion USD. Cashew imports from the Cambodian market alone increased by 36.7% in volume and 28.1% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

Cambodian cashew nuts accounted for 55.5% of our country's total import turnover of this item in the first half of this year.

Cashews are known to many consumers as a super nutritious nut. Vietnam is the world's number one exporter of cashews. However, the domestic supply of raw materials for processing in our country is limited, so businesses have to import cashews in large quantities. Therefore, in addition to Cambodia, businesses also import a large amount of cashews from Africa.

However, the situation of importing poor quality cashews to impersonate domestic cashew brands is increasingly common, affecting the reputation as well as the Vietnamese cashew brand.

Recently, the Binh Phuoc Cashew Association had to “call for help” because of the situation of poor quality goods impersonating the province’s cashew brand being sold widely online. This type of cashew is being sold at a super cheap price, only 100,000 VND/6 boxes of broken cashews, weighing 3kg; 100,000 VND/3 boxes of cashews with shells weighing 1.5kg...

The above products are old-crop imported cashew nuts of poor quality. Many of them have worms and mold inside, no longer have the characteristic flavor and can affect the health of consumers.

Cashews from Cambodia are flooding into Vietnam in huge quantities, causing Vietnam, the world's top strength, to return to a period of trade deficit.
