On the afternoon of June 23 at Blankenhain Castle, Thuringia (Germany), which the England team will use as a media center during EURO 2024, captain Harry Kane was present to answer questions before the match against Slovenia.
A local reporter approached the Bayern star and asked him “what he thought about staying in Thuringia long term”. He even went as far as to mention the prospect of Kane playing for SG Lauscha/Neuhaus, a team from the Thuringian village of Lauscha, which has a population of just 3,000. The club had just been promoted to Germany’s seventh tier and were in need of a striker.
While Kane was still bewildered, having heard of SG Lauscha/Neuhaus for the first time, the reporter showed him a pre-written contract, waiting for the England captain to sign. "You will receive minimum wage, but in return you will be able to eat as much Thuringian sausage as you want, and free drinks at the local bar for life. Another benefit is that you will have more time for the national team," the reporter suggested.
Kane seemed amused by the joke and joined in. "Okay, I'll talk to my agent and see what we can do," he said.
Kane has had his moments of joy during what has been a difficult time. He has been criticised for his poor form, despite scoring the Three Lions' only goal in a 1-1 draw with Denmark. According to the Telegraph, Kane has been devastated by Bayern's trophyless season and his gloomy mood will continue into EURO 2024.
