According to history, the name of Ngoc Son district (today's Nghi Son town) was given by King Le Thanh Tong in the 15th century, and there was a compliment: "Ngoc Son trung tu van nien co", meaning Ngoc Son concentrates on beautiful scenery with a thousand-year origin.
Throughout history, the name and boundaries of Nghi Son town have changed many times. During the Han Dynasty, Nghi Son belonged to the southeast part of Cu Phong district of Cuu Chan district. During the Three Kingdoms period, Nghi Son was the land of Thuong Lac district, during the Sui and Tang dynasties it was An Thuan district. After our country gained independence from the 10th century, through the Ngo - Dinh - Tien Le - Ly dynasties, the place name of Nghi Son remained unchanged. During the Tran - Ho dynasties (13th - 14th centuries), Nghi Son was Co Chien district. During the Ming Dynasty, it was renamed Co Binh, also called Ket Thue district, belonging to Cuu Chan district, under Thanh Hoa prefecture.

In the 10th year of Quang Thuan (1469) under the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, the district was named Ngoc Son, and Tinh Ninh prefecture was in charge. From then until the beginning of the Nguyen Dynasty, the district name Ngoc Son was kept. In the 19th year of Minh Mang (1838), along with the renaming of some districts such as Thuy Nguyen to Thieu Hoa, Loi Duong to Tho Xuan, Ngoc Son, Nong Cong, and Quang Xuong districts were merged into Tinh Gia prefecture. After the August Revolution in 1945, the land of Ngoc Son district became Tinh Gia district. On April 22, 2020, the National Assembly Standing Committee issued Resolution No. 933/NQ-UBTVQH14 to establish Nghi Son town and wards of Nghi Son town, Thanh Hoa province, opening a historical turning point for the southernmost land of Thanh Hoa province.

According to Decision No. 153/QD-TTg dated February 27, 2023 of the Prime Minister on the planning of Thanh Hoa province for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2045, regarding marine tourism, focusing on development in coastal localities, focusing on Sam Son coastal tourism urban area, Hai Tien tourist area (Hoang Hoa), coastal tourist area of Quang Xuong district and Nghi Son town; developing tourism products to explore the sea and islands in Hon Ne and Hon Me areas (Nghi Son)...

Nghi Son town has been focusing on promoting and attracting businesses to invest in tourism projects in the area, typically the Tan Dan, Hai Linh, Ninh Hai, Hai Ninh, Binh Minh marine eco-tourism areas, Hao Hao lake - Am Cac pagoda eco-tourism area, Hoang Quoc Cong Dao Duy Tu temple, Quang Trung - Lach Bang relic cluster, Bien Son scenic relic complex, Truong Lam cave complex.
Nghi Son town determines to develop tourism associated with preserving and promoting cultural and ethnic values; preserving landscapes, protecting the environment; ensuring national defense - security and social order and safety, with 3 main types including sea tourism, community eco-tourism and spiritual cultural tourism.

In addition, the town has focused on building a master plan for tourism development, including expanding the planning of Hai Hoa tourist area in association with coastal communes and wards and connecting with Me island and historical and cultural relic clusters, scenic spots such as Dot Tien pagoda, Quang Trung temple, Lach Bang temple, Khanh temple, Am Cac pagoda... and eco-tourism routes such as Truong Lam, Phu Son, Yen My lake, Hao Hao lake.

In the town, there are 20 large and small festivals taking place every year, typically Quang Trung festival, fishing festival, rice cooking competition, which are festivals associated with coastal fishermen with unique values that attract tourists.
With special values, on April 9, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 955/QD-BVHTTDL on the announcement of the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, accordingly, the Traditional Festival of Quang Trung Temple Festival in Lach Bang and Cu Lao Bien (Bien Son), Hai Thanh Ward and Nghi Son Commune (Nghi Son Town) was included in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Nghi Son is home to many traditional craft villages, typically seafood exploitation and processing. Many seafood products caught, farmed and processed such as shrimp, fish, squid, fish sauce, shrimp paste, and sour fish sauce have become indispensable gifts for tourists when coming to Nghi Son town, creating many unique specialties available in markets throughout the country.

In 2023, Nghi Son town's tourism products have built a prominent brand inside and outside the province and become large-scale and competitive tourism products, typically Hai Hoa, Bai Dong, Anh Phat beach tourism areas... The number of tourists reached 1,204,000, exceeding 0.3% of the plan assigned by the province; total revenue from tourism reached 2,300 billion VND, exceeding 0.4% of the plan assigned by the province.

To contribute to the successful implementation of the goals of Thanh Hoa tourism industry, in 2024 Nghi Son town is strengthening the State management of tourism, focusing on investing in infrastructure of tourist areas and spots; ensuring security - safety and quality of tourism services for tourists, building a safe, friendly and attractive image of Nghi Son tourism. The town strives to welcome over 1.2 million visitors, with total tourism revenue reaching over 2,300 billion VND in 2024; having 115 accommodation establishments, of which 10% are ranked from 2 to 4 stars and 75% of tourism service workers are professionally trained.
As planned, the opening ceremony of the Nghi Son Sea Tourism Festival 2024 will take place at 8:00 p.m. on April 26, 2024 at the Sea Square of Hai Hoa Sea Tourism Area and will be broadcast live on Thanh Hoa Provincial Radio and Television Station, widely communicated on mass media.
The art program with the theme "Nghi Son pearl sea - Aspiration to reach far" promotes Nghi Son town tourism as always a safe, friendly and attractive destination with the goal of creating a highlight to attract tourists and investors to Nghi Son town, Nghi Son Economic Zone, worthy of being the southernmost industrial - tourist urban area of Thanh Hoa.

The new feature of the Nghi Son Sea Tourism Festival 2024 is the organization of a space to display and introduce OCOP products with 50 booths of businesses and business households in the town and some localities inside and outside the province.
Along with that, cultural activities and traditional folk games are organized to serve the people and tourists, such as performing rice cooking competitions, performing "Gia hau co be thuong ngan" - the performance that won the A prize at the 20th Thanh Hoa Ethnic Culture Festival - 2024 and the men's open volleyball tournament.
