Journey to spread reading culture

Việt NamViệt Nam23/04/2024

Our ancestors used to say, “Leaving gold and silver is not as good as leaving books for children”, or “A treasure of gold is not as good as a bag of books”, which is enough to show the respect and affirmation of the role, position and importance of books in social life. Therefore, teachers at Luong The Vinh High School (Ham Thuan Nam) are creating all spaces and environments for reading and learning together so that students can share, form and develop a reading culture…

Bring students closer to books

Reading is the way to collect and accumulate knowledge and understanding, it is also the best way to receive social and life experiences. Reading is also a preparation for long-term training on the path of education. However, in the current social context, the development of media makes it easier for students to access new things, love things with higher entertainment, from which reading gradually becomes boring.

Ms. Nguyen Thi My Diem - literature teacher, head of the Reading Club said: When entering school, the students are all at the age of 15 - 16, the age when their personalities have gradually formed and it is very difficult to change their habits, especially reading. Therefore, to deepen their curiosity, I have to start by guiding, introducing, understanding their psychology, and arousing their interest in the books available in the school library, good books about life skills... I always remind them to start with the books they love and read carefully, write down their thoughts to turn the content of the book into real life.

Students reading books in the school library

Since 2023, Luong The Vinh High School has established a Reading Club with 115 students. After that, the club was divided into small groups in classes led by literature teachers for members to conveniently participate in activities. In order to enhance connection, exchange, and share good books, the club often organizes writing competitions, makes clips about a book, draws mind maps summarizing books, etc. In addition, each class has a small bookshelf for students to conveniently read at any time, any free time. Many times, teachers in charge were surprised by students boldly introducing a new work within their limited knowledge, boldly suggesting or writing the ending for the stories. After listening and reading, the teachers were overwhelmed when the students really understood and were gradually changing themselves.

Books and actions

In their role as teachers who open up knowledge and guide students to find and exploit documents well, teachers at Luong The Vinh High School always encourage students to visit the school library. Although the school does not have a librarian yet, the teachers in charge and the reading club are ready to support students when needed. At the same time, from the annual support from students, benefactors and teachers, the school's book resources are more abundant, currently having more than 6,000 books of all kinds.

Rewarding students with books

Ms. Dinh Thi Ha - Vice Principal of Luong The Vinh High School shared: Not everyone has a passion for books from a young age, so to encourage students to read, many teachers have chosen books as rewards and gifts for students. Extracurricular activities on reading culture, from books to dramatization, are held regularly. Thanks to that, the 900 students in the whole school have the awareness to strive and constantly strive in their studies.

Sowing the seeds of love of books in students

Nguyen Huynh Kim Ngan shared: Books have filled me, filled the gaps and shortcomings of each of us so that we can develop better every day. Ho Tien Phat said: Books are not only a bridge between people and knowledge but also connect people with people. Our reading journey will be less interesting if we cannot spread the reading culture to the people around us.

With affection and practical actions, teachers of Luong The Vinh High School are still sowing the seeds of love for books every day, making efforts and perseverance so that books are the link connecting generations, so that reading culture is a part of students' lives. From there, helping students increase their ability to access and use information and knowledge, contributing to building a learning society.
