Our ancestors used to say, "Leaving gold and silver is not as good as leaving books to your children," or "A treasure of gold is not worth a treasure of books," which is enough to show the appreciation and affirmation of the role, position, and importance of books in social life. Therefore, the teachers at Luong The Vinh High School (Ham Thuan Nam) are creating spaces and environments for students to read and learn together, sharing, forming, and developing a reading culture…
Bring students closer to books.
Reading is a way to accumulate and enhance knowledge and understanding; it's also the best way to acquire social and life experiences. Reading also prepares you for a long academic journey. However, in today's society, the development of media allows students easy access to new things and a preference for highly entertaining content, making reading seem boring.
Ms. Nguyen Thi My Diem, a literature teacher and head of the Reading Club, said: "When they enter the school, the students are all around 15-16 years old, an age where their personalities are already forming and it's very difficult to change habits, especially reading. Therefore, to deepen their curiosity and exploration , I have to start by guiding them, introducing them to books, understanding their psychology, and sparking their interest in the books available in the school library, good books on life skills, etc. I always remind them to start with books they love and to read carefully, noting down their thoughts to turn the content of the book into practical life."
Since 2023, Luong The Vinh High School has established a Reading Club with 115 students. The club was then divided into smaller groups in each class, supervised by literature teachers, to facilitate members' activities. To enhance connection, interaction, and sharing of good books, the club regularly organizes writing competitions, video contests about book reviews, and mind map summaries. In addition, each classroom has a small bookshelf for students to read at any time and during their free time. Teachers have often been surprised by students' boldness in introducing new works, despite their limited knowledge, and confidently suggesting or writing sequels to stories. After listening and reading, the teachers are overwhelmed by how the students truly understand and are gradually changing themselves.
Books and Action
As educators who inspire knowledge and guide students in finding and utilizing resources effectively, teachers at Luong The Vinh High School always encourage students to visit the school library. Although the school currently lacks a dedicated librarian, the teachers in charge, along with the reading club, are ready to assist students whenever needed. Furthermore, thanks to annual donations from students, benefactors, and teachers, the school's book collection has become even richer, currently boasting over 6,000 titles of various kinds.
Ms. Dinh Thi Ha, Vice Principal of Luong The Vinh High School, shared: "Not everyone has a passion for books from a young age, so to encourage students to read, many teachers have chosen books as rewards and gifts for students. Extracurricular activities on reading culture, from reading books to dramatizations, are regularly held. Thanks to this, all 900 students in the school have a sense of striving for excellence and constantly making efforts in their studies."
Nguyen Huynh Kim Ngan shared: "Books have filled the voids and shortcomings within each of us, helping us to develop better every day." Ho Tien Phat added: "Books are not only a bridge between people and knowledge, but also connect people with each other. Our reading journey would be less enjoyable if we couldn't spread the culture of reading to our friends around us."
Through their dedication and practical actions, the teachers of Luong The Vinh High School are daily sowing the seeds of a love for books, striving persistently to make books a connecting thread between generations, and to make reading culture an integral part of students' lives. This helps students enhance their ability to access and utilize information and knowledge, contributing to the building of a learning society.
