On February 8, the Bangkok Post reported that authorities in Thailand had just arrested a Canadian passenger for opening the emergency exit on a Thai Airways flight, causing the pontoon to pop open.

The incident happened at around 9:00 p.m. on February 7 at Chiang Mai airport, when the plane was taxiing to the runway to depart for Bangkok.

According to witnesses, passenger Wong Sai Heung (40 years old) suddenly rushed to open an emergency exit in front, causing the pontoon to pop. Flight attendants and a passenger restrained Mr. Heung.

Passengers had to return to the terminal and then board another plane that took off at 12:34 the same day.

Meanwhile, police at Bhubingrajanivej station in Chiang Mai have charged the Chinese-Canadian passenger with endangering others, as well as violating the instructions of the pilot and flight attendants.

Mr. Heung admitted to the violation. Earlier, while on the plane, this passenger insisted that someone was trying to attack him.

Chiang Mai airport officials later said Thai Airways technicians had to cut the pontoon bridge. The plane was brought back to the apron and the blocked runway was reopened at 10:50 p.m. on February 7.

The incident affected a total of 2,296 passengers on 13 flights, including three departures and eight arrivals that had to circle the airport and two others that were diverted to other airports.

Thai Airways issued a statement on February 8 saying that all passengers and crew on the affected flights were safe.
