(CLO) On the first day of the new year 2025, the world witnessed a series of terrorist attacks. Besides the terrifying truck crash in the US, there were a series of other serious incidents in Germany and Montenegro.

America in shock on New Year's Day

As New Year’s Eve 2025 passed, the United States received bad news when a suspect with links to the terrorist organization IS used a pickup truck to ram into a famous French Quarter in the city of New Orleans, USA. After plowing into the crowd, the perpetrator also engaged in a fierce gun battle with the police force, causing the death of at least 15 people and injuring dozens of others.

The suspect was identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a US citizen from Texas who had served in Afghanistan, and was killed in a shootout with police later.

Not long after, another news also shocked and scared the US about the rising specter of terrorism. A Tesla Cybertruck exploded and caught fire outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year's Day 2025, killing the driver and injuring 7 others.

Videos taken by witnesses inside and outside the hotel show the car exploding and flames erupting from inside while it was parked just outside the hotel.

Las Vegas authorities believe fireworks, gas cans and camping fuel were connected to the detonation system in the incident. The FBI is working to determine whether the incident was an act of terrorism, Jeremy Schwartz, special agent in charge of the FBI's Las Vegas office, said Wednesday.

Las Vegas Police Chief Kevin McMahill said at a press conference that a vehicle fire broke out at the hotel around 8:40 a.m. local time and firefighters arrived at the scene and found the 2024 Cybertruck engulfed in flames.

McMahill said Wednesday evening that one person died inside the Cybertruck, where the body remains as authorities continue to investigate. Seven victims were injured in the explosion, all in stable condition, Deputy Sheriff Billy Samuels said.

McMahill said the truck was rented in Colorado and arrived in Las Vegas around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. About an hour later, after driving up and down Las Vegas Boulevard, the truck stopped in front of the Trump Hotel and exploded, authorities said Wednesday night.

Thousands of fireworks attacks in Germany

Meanwhile, in Germany, a series of different attacks, including fireworks, occurred during the New Year's Eve 2025. According to the authorities of this country, at least 5 people were killed and dozens of rescue workers were injured when a series of fireworks-related incidents marred the New Year's Eve celebrations in Germany.

Two people were among the dead in the eastern state of Saxony, including a 45-year-old man who died after handling what was described as a "firework bomb", according to local broadcaster MDR.

Firefighters and other rescue workers were targeted in the fireworks display during the festival that ran from Tuesday night into Wednesday, authorities said.

In the capital Berlin, firefighters responded to 1,892 incidents on New Year's Eve - 294 more than last year, according to a statement from the city's fire department. More than 1,500 emergency workers were on duty. At least 13 attacks on rescue workers were reported, the statement said.

Berlin police spokesman Florian Nath said 330 people were arrested in the capital on New Year’s Eve. One police officer was seriously injured after “probably being hit by illegal fireworks” and is undergoing surgery in hospital. “Some people standing around the scene attacked the police and this is one of the worst incidents of the night,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Munich fire department said a stray firework caused a large fire on the first-floor balcony of an apartment building. The fire then spread to a second-floor apartment, a statement from the fire department said.

Crazy shooting in Montenegro

In Montenegro, a gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing at least 10 people in a massacre in a small town. The gunman, identified by police as Aleksandar Martinovic, 45, died after committing suicide near his home in the town of Cetinje while surrounded by police.

"When he found himself in a hopeless situation, he committed suicide. He did not die on the spot from his injuries but died while being taken to hospital," Saranovic told Montenegro's state broadcaster RTCG.

Martinovic fled after opening fire on Wednesday afternoon at a restaurant in Cetinje, a small town 38 kilometers west of Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, where he killed four people.

The shooter then moved to three other locations, killing at least six more people, including two children, police said. Four others suffered life-threatening injuries.

Wednesday's incident has shocked the nation of just 605,000 people. Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic called the attack a "terrible tragedy" and declared three days of national mourning.
