"The Secret Service has taken protective measures and the former President is safe," a Secret Service spokesperson told X after the incident. "The investigation is ongoing and more details will be released as they become available."
Multiple gunshots were heard at the outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, shortly after Mr Trump began his speech.

Bodyguards immediately surrounded Mr Trump as he ducked under the podium and armed officers took up positions at the front of the stage. Mr Trump repeatedly raised his fists at the crowd and shouted as he was escorted to a vehicle by the Secret Service.
CNN reported that Mr. Trump was injured, but did not provide further details. It is unclear how or where he was injured. Video and photos of the incident showed him bleeding from his right ear and the right side of his face.

A Trump campaign spokesman said he was fine and was being evaluated at a local medical facility, CNN reported. The White House said US President Joe Biden had received an initial report of the incident.
According to the latest sources from US law enforcement agencies, a shooter at Mr. Trump's campaign in Pennsylvania has been "neutralized".

Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden are in a fierce re-election battle, with most recent opinion polls showing that both sides have an equal chance of winning.
However, Mr Biden is facing a boycott within his own party after a poor debate performance with Mr Trump more than two weeks ago. However, he still declared that he would continue the race for the White House this year.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a statement following the incident, saying, "I am appalled by what happened at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania and relieved to know former President Trump is safe. Political violence has no place in our country."
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose uncle, the late President John F. Kennedy, and father, the late Senator Robert Francis Kennedy, were both assassinated in the past, called for unity in what was seen as an attempted assassination.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement on X that he was praying for former President Donald Trump. “My thoughts and prayers are with former President Trump,” he said.
