Bringing Tet goods to serve flood victims

Storm No. 3 (Yagi) has caused a shortage of many essential goods, vegetables, and food in the North. In addition to increasing fresh food, the supply of instant products such as instant noodles, canned meat, sausages, and processed eggs from businesses in the southern provinces and cities to the North has also been promoted to promptly support affected people. Mr. Nguyen Phuc Khoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Livestock Industry Corporation (Vissan), said that the company has a factory in Bac Ninh, which is currently operating at full capacity and working overtime to meet the market's food consumption needs. In addition, Vissan also transports products that the Bac Ninh factory does not produce or that are in high demand from the South to the North.

Ho Chi Minh City businesses are ready to work overtime and increase capacity to serve the Northern market.

According to Mr. Khoa, from the end of July to the beginning of August, Vissan has started planning and preparing goods for production to serve the Tet market, so the amount of goods in stock is quite abundant. Therefore, when the Northern market has demand, the company quickly brings out this reserve to serve the market.

“At the factory in Ho Chi Minh City, we normally only work one session on Saturday, but now we are working overtime in the afternoon to serve the Northern market. If necessary, we can continue to work overtime on Sunday to serve the market,” Mr. Khoa affirmed. Also because of the sudden increase in demand, up to this point, the demand for Vissan products has increased by about 20% compared to the period before the storm and flood. In addition to increasing production, according to Mr. Khoa, to share the difficulties with the people affected by the storm and flood in the North, all officers and employees of the company have unanimously contributed 1 day's salary; the total amount of support, including gifts, is worth nearly 500 million VND. “The company also has a special promotion program, with a discount of 5-20% exclusively for organizations and units that need to buy products to help the people in the North,” Mr. Khoa informed.

Mr. Truong Chi Thien, General Director of Vinh Thanh Dat Food Joint Stock Company (V.Food), also said: “Right after super typhoon No. 3 Yagi passed, we planned a special sale in the spirit of accompanying our compatriots to overcome natural disasters. That is to implement a special discount program for relief and charity orders. Specifically, instant stewed chicken eggs cost only 3,500 VND/egg compared to the supermarket price of 5,000 VND/egg. Or stewed chicken eggs for relief goods are sold at 2,200 VND/egg compared to the supermarket price of 4,500 VND/egg. With this special discount policy, in the past few days, the number of new orders we received increased by over 20%”.

“We publish the information on the company’s Facebook page. When we see a stranger buying in large quantities, we investigate. If it is true that they are participating in relief activities for the people in the North, we will immediately reduce the price. Because we cannot participate in direct relief, we want to use our products to contribute a small part to help people overcome natural disasters,” Mr. Thien added.

Mr. Thien shared that the livestock industry in the North was also severely damaged by storms and floods, but mainly on the scale of households and small farms. Large farms are still operating, so the supply of fresh eggs is only locally and temporarily lacking in some localities. “This shortage will only last for a few days and then the market mechanism will balance it. Overall, Vietnam's livestock industry is quite abundant in output, so there is no need to worry about shortages. Currently, we are closely monitoring market developments so that when necessary, we can increase operating capacity to the same level as during the holidays to meet demand,” said the leader of V.Food.

No worries about shortage of supply

It is impossible not to mention the role of retail systems in this storm and flood. Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van, Communications Director of Central Retail VN Group, said: As one of the major retailers in the market, in recent days, the staff of Central Retail VN has made great efforts to ensure the supply of goods to serve the needs of people in the northern provinces. Specifically, with vegetables and fruits, essential goods in daily life that have been heavily affected by storms and floods, the Central Retail system has sent many trucks to increase goods to the North.

Specifically, each truck from Da Lat previously carried 40 tons/trip, but now it has increased to 80 tons/trip. Thanks to that, GO! and Big C supermarkets have increased their vegetable output by 100% compared to normal days. Similarly, meat, fish, and seafood of all kinds have also increased supply from unaffected areas to compensate for the supply in damaged areas. In addition, supermarkets have also increased imports of frozen goods to supplement the very high demand from customers. "Despite the increased costs, Central Retail is committed to keeping the selling price the same as before the storm and flood. Currently, we are also monitoring market developments and closely coordinating with suppliers to be ready to increase supply to serve the market when necessary," said Ms. Van.

The Ho Chi Minh City Food Association also informed that the city's business community is closely monitoring market developments and is ready to increase supply in any situation to ensure the supply of goods to serve the people in the North. Businesses are preparing goods to serve the Tet market, so the source of raw materials and reserve output is very abundant.

Based on the actual situation, the Association will develop a detailed plan to support localities with large livestock areas that have been damaged, and will provide support with breeding stock, veterinary medicine, animal feed and other supplies. Commercial poultry flocks can recover quickly, but for breeding flocks, it will take up to 6 months. Therefore, we also take advantage of the time and call on social resources to join hands to support livestock farmers to restore production as soon as possible.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Chairman of Vietnam Poultry Association

In the northern provinces, according to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Chairman of the Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA): Even in the suburbs of Hanoi, some members of the Association were also affected by the recent storm and flood. In addition, many other businesses in Thai Binh, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, etc. suffered heavy losses, many households and businesses lost all their assets. This situation will certainly affect the meat supply in the coming months.

In that context, localities and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are launching a program to restore agricultural production, including livestock farming. In the immediate future, the Association is mobilizing members to contribute cash to support people, and some businesses are sending supplies and food to affected provinces to support people. In addition, the Association is compiling statistics on the losses of its members to continue taking further actions to support members and farmers to restore production.

“Based on the actual situation, the Association will develop a detailed plan to support localities with large livestock areas that have suffered damage, and will provide support with breeding stock, veterinary medicine, animal feed and other supplies. Commercial poultry flocks can recover quickly, but for breeding flocks, it will take up to 6 months. Therefore, we are also taking advantage of the time and calling on social resources to join hands to support livestock farmers to restore production as soon as possible,” said Mr. Son.
