Japanese airline struggles to recover after cyber attack

(CLO) Japan Airlines announced on Thursday that its systems have been restored after a cyber attack that occurred earlier.

At 7:24 a.m. on Thursday, a cyberattack paralyzed Japan Airlines' internal and external systems, causing major disruptions to the airline's operations. To remedy the situation, JAL had to temporarily shut down a router that caused the problem and suspend ticket sales for all flights departing that day.

Japan Airlines has confirmed that the cyber attack did not cause any damage to customer data. Its systems are safe and unaffected by the computer virus. However, the incident caused more than 20 domestic flights to be disrupted.

Japan Airlines blamed the incident on a cyberattack designed to overload its network with large data transmissions. These types of attacks, known as denial-of-service attacks, flood a system with traffic until it crashes or becomes unresponsive.

Experts have long warned about Japan's cybersecurity vulnerabilities, especially as the country strengthens its defense strategies and increases cooperation with the United States and other allies.

In June, Japan's space agency revealed it had been targeted by a series of cyberattacks since 2023, although vital data on missiles, satellites and defence systems were said to remain unaffected.

A cyberattack last year disrupted operations at a container terminal in the port of Nagoya, forcing all operations to stop for three days.
