On March 23, Tra Vinh Provincial Police said that Tra Cu District Police had just clarified the gas poisoning case at Ngai Xuyen A Primary School (Ngai Xuyen Commune).
At around 6:30 a.m. on March 20, 8 students from Ngai Xuyen A Primary School went to the store of Ms. Ha Thi Cam Le (55 years old) to buy 11 explosive balloons (also known as rotten balloons) and brought them to 3 classes (classes 3/1, 4/1 and 4/2). After that, the students used their hands to strongly impact the balloons to inflate them to play, leading to the balloons exploding.
The number of exploded balloons (also known as rotten balloons) was temporarily seized by the authorities.
At around 7am the same day, the school teacher entered the classroom and discovered 21 students showing signs of vomiting and headaches, so he took them to the emergency room.
Tra Cu District Police coordinated with Tra Cu District Medical Center to conduct an inspection, verify and determine the cause of poisoning was due to the children inhaling gas inside the exploding balloon.
Checking Ms. Le's store, the authorities discovered and temporarily seized 9 You Stink branded explosive balloons of unclear origin and without Vietnamese subtitles for use to be handled according to the law. Currently, 21 students are in stable health and have returned to school.
Tra Cu District Police said that in the coming time, they will coordinate with relevant agencies to increase propaganda about the harmful effects of explosive balloons in schools and among people to know and prevent; inspect and strictly handle cases of trading in goods of unknown origin, especially goods commonly used by children.
