Yonhap news agency quoted a statement from the South Korean Unification Ministry, saying that it had inspected 70 balloons released from North Korea and discovered many types of parasites such as roundworms, whipworms and pinworms.

Reuters added that human DNA was also found in some of the plastic bags containing soil. The ministry also said that the balloons contained shredded clothing, which was previously supplied to North Korea by a South Korean company.

“It appears that North Korea damaged and sent these products to South Korea to express its opposition to the leaflet campaigns and highlight its hostile stance toward Seoul,” a South Korean Unification Ministry official said.

A garbage balloon believed to have come from North Korea appeared in Incheon city, South Korea on June 2.

North Korea has launched several rounds of balloons carrying trash into South Korea since late May. Pyongyang said the move was in response to activists in South Korea launching balloons containing medicine, food, money and leaflets into North Korea, according to Reuters.

Last week, North Korea said it would launch more balloons containing trash. Seoul has deployed its military explosives and biochemical units to examine the recovered objects. South Korea has advised people who spot balloons not to approach them but to call authorities immediately.
