(CLO) The South Korean Presidential Office said on November 6 that it will build a "perfect" security partnership with President-elect Donald Trump and the new US administration.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is expected to speak with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in the coming days, a senior presidential official said.

In the two and a half years since Mr. Yoon became President, no one on either side of the political aisle in the United States has questioned the importance of the US-South Korea alliance or the need to develop it globally, the official said.

South Korea is a staunch US ally in the region, with about 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea.

Last month, Washington and Seoul agreed on a new five-year plan for sharing the cost of maintaining US troops in South Korea. During his presidency, Donald Trump accused South Korea of relying too much on US military power and demanded that it pay up to $5 billion a year for the deployment of US troops in South Korea.

After Mr. Trump declared victory in the 2024 presidential election, marking his stunning return to the White House after a four-year term, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol wrote on X: "Congratulations @realDonaldTrump! Under your strong leadership, the future of the Korea-US alliance as well as the United States will be brighter. Looking forward to working closely with you."
