According to South Korea's JoongAng Daily, on November 27, the Gyeongbuk Fire Department received a report of an accident involving a truck on the Joongang Expressway in North Gyeongsang Province.
Due to slippery snowy roads, the aforementioned trailer truck lost control and crashed into the guardrail on Pungsan Bridge in Andong, causing part of the truck's cabin to hang over the edge of the bridge, and the driver was trapped inside.
The driver, a man in his 60s, was clinging to the driver's seat and hanging on the trailer, his upper body stuck inside the front of the trailer but his lower body dangling outside, about 11 meters above the ground. Upon seeing the victim, rescue worker Park Joon Hyun immediately grabbed the driver's hand and held him for the next 45 minutes.
Mr. Park held the victim's hand tightly for 45 minutes while waiting for rescue.
The Daily reported that Mr. Park arrived in an ambulance, rather than a fire truck, and therefore lacked proper rescue equipment. Rescue crews arrived within 15 minutes, but Mr. Park refused to release the driver, fearing that doing so might cause him to fall.
The Korea Herald wrote that the car was badly damaged, making it difficult to open the door and carry out rescue operations. However, the victim was later secured with a rope tied around his arm.
Mr. Park told the media that the driver was stunned by shock and he had to constantly reassure him to help him stay awake, as well as avoid sudden movements.
A lot of equipment was brought in during the rescue. Authorities arranged an air mattress underneath and a ladder truck with a lifting basket. Images released by the fire department showed firefighters strapped to a crane on the bridge, walking along the truck cab to rescue the driver.
The driver was finally rescued about an hour after the crash and taken to hospital.
Driver stuck in the front of the trailer hanging from the bridge railing.
Park told reporters that he did not feel much pain while holding the truck driver, but his arm remained numb afterward. A self-described shy person, he said the attention he received when the incident went viral on social media was “overwhelming.” However, his proud wife showed the video of the incident to their two children under the age of seven.
South Korea has just experienced its heaviest snowfall in more than 50 years, with up to 16.5 cm of snow falling on November 27, far surpassing the previous record of 12.4 cm in 1972.
The snow has affected power supplies, delayed more than 200 flights and caused numerous traffic accidents.
