How can we minimize medical complications in cosmetic procedures?

The United States has one of the most developed cosmetic surgery industries in the world , but it has also recorded many medical incidents in this field.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS), common causes include: Lack of proper training; some doctors without the necessary certifications performing complex surgeries; Use of unsafe products such as fillers or botox from unknown sources leading to infection, allergies, or necrosis;

The United States has one of the most developed cosmetic surgery industries in the world, but it has also recorded many medical incidents in this field.

The lack of strict control by regulatory agencies has led to some establishments operating illegally or failing to meet hygiene standards.

Brazil is one of the leading countries in cosmetic surgery, but it also faces many serious medical incidents. Key issues include illegal practices and substandard cosmetic surgery facilities.

South Korea is considered the cosmetic surgery hub of Asia, but it also faces numerous issues related to medical misconduct: Foreign doctors without medical licenses in South Korea perform surgeries illegally;

Many cosmetic surgery tourists from other countries come to South Korea and experience post-operative complications, facing difficulties in treatment due to a lack of access to medical care after returning home.

Thailand is also quite famous for its cosmetic tourism industry, but it has also recorded many cases of misconduct, especially involving foreign tourists, due to: Lack of safety standards: Some clinics operate illegally, not meeting international medical standards, causing many cases of complications;

Problems with medical tourists: Foreign visitors face difficulties dealing with post-surgical complications and challenges in monitoring and treatment.

In European countries such as the UK, France, and Germany, cosmetic surgery is not immune to errors and medical incidents due to: Lack of strict control; some European countries report a lack of supervision in the cosmetic surgery industry; and many doctors do not meet the required standards to practice.

Medical incidents caused by substandard cosmetic materials, such as many cases involving the use of substandard or unidentifiable fillers, can occur.

In response to this situation, many countries have been strengthening management and supervision measures to limit medical errors and incidents in the field of cosmetic surgery, including key activities such as tightening regulations on cosmetic practice: Applying stricter regulations on cosmetic practice licenses and accreditation standards for medical facilities to provide cosmetic services;

Raising customer awareness: those seeking cosmetic services are encouraged to thoroughly research the facility and the doctor performing the procedure before making a decision;

Strict control over cosmetic products: Products such as fillers and botox must undergo quality checks and have a clear origin before use.

In Vietnam, in response to medical malpractice and incidents related to cosmetic procedures, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has identified five groups of solutions.

First and foremost, it is necessary to strictly enforce regulations in the practice of cosmetic surgery, both regarding licenses for specialized cosmetic surgery and the assessment process for allowing medical facilities to provide cosmetic services;

Strengthen communication activities and continue to publicly disclose information about beauty establishments that violate the law in order to raise public awareness when they need to use beauty services;

To standardize professional guidelines and technical procedures for cosmetic surgery, while awaiting further issuance of technical procedure guidelines by the Ministry of Health, the Department of Health will mobilize leading experts in the relevant field to unify and compile guidelines, disseminate them, provide training, supervise, and inspect compliance by all cosmetic clinics in the area;

We propose that the Ministry of Health supplement legal regulations to strictly control products used in the field of aesthetics (including medicines, medical supplies, and equipment);

Establishing digital data for management in the field of aesthetics, implementing electronic medical records at all specialized aesthetic hospitals, general hospitals with cosmetic surgery or aesthetic medicine departments, and specialized aesthetic clinics, and building a database for managing aesthetic practice in the city.

Regarding illegal cosmetic procedures, the Inspectorate of the Department of Health has identified key solutions to focus on, such as encouraging citizens to monitor and report to state management agencies when they discover individuals or organizations providing unlicensed or disguised cosmetic services, in order to prevent and handle violations according to regulations. This can be done through the "Online Health" software or via the hotlines of the Department of Health (0967.771.010) and the Inspectorate of the Department of Health (0989.401.155).

Prompt reporting upon receiving suspected cases of complications related to cosmetic procedures: Hospitals under ministries and departments, hospitals under the Department of Health, and the 115 Emergency Center are requested to proactively contact the Special Task Force of the Department of Health (through the Department's Inspectorate) to promptly activate the rapid response procedure.

Coordinate with the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in the assessment and supervision of training and vocational education management activities, in accordance with the Coordination Regulations signed by the two Departments.

Continue to strengthen coordination with departments, agencies, and localities in the state management of unlicensed cosmetic establishments, thereby creating an effective "network" to promptly and thoroughly handle violations in this field.

Handling key and priority cases: For cases of deliberate and repeated violations, the Department of Health will transfer the case to the Ho Chi Minh City Police for handling according to their jurisdiction.

At the same time, we will continue to enhance the effectiveness of the Special Task Force of the Department of Health in proactively detecting and strictly handling illegal advertisements in the field of cosmetic surgery.
