"The friendship between the armies and peoples of the two countries was formed and deeply developed during the bloody struggle against the common enemy. It is a strong driving force to promote the development of friendship and cooperation into a comprehensive strategic partnership and invincible comradeship," said Mr. Kim.

This was Mr. Kim Jong Un's response to Mr. Putin's congratulatory message on the anniversary of the August 15 Liberation Day from Japanese fascism after World War II, in which the Russian leader said that the implementation of agreements between Russia and North Korea contributes to stability and security in the region.

"The two countries paid tribute to the Red Army soldiers and Korean patriots who fought shoulder to shoulder for the liberation of Korea. It is important that the friendly relations and mutual support during those fierce war days remain a reliable basis for the development of good neighborly relations between the two countries," KCNA news agency quoted Putin's message.

The letter "expressed confidence that the thorough implementation of the agreements reached during the recent talks held in Pyongyang will further promote the expansion of bilateral cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

According to KCNA, the document stated: "This is completely in line with the interests of the people of the two countries and will contribute to ensuring stability and security in the region."

Mr. Kim visited the memorial to Korean revolutionary soldiers who fought against Japan to end colonial rule from 1910-1945. He also visited the Liberation Tower, which commemorates Soviet Red Army soldiers.

In June this year, Mr. Kim and Mr. Putin held their second summit in less than a year in Pyongyang, signing a pact on a “comprehensive strategic partnership” that included a mutual defense agreement.
