On the evening of June 6, Ms. NTNN (residing in Xuan Tho commune, Xuan Loc district, Dong Nai) and her 12-year-old son caught some cicada pupae (with mushrooms growing on their heads) to fry and eat.
Cicada pupae are 'attacked' by fungus and develop outside the host
About 1 hour after eating, the mother and child experienced symptoms of dizziness, abdominal pain and vomiting. The family took the victim to Long Khanh Regional General Hospital for emergency treatment. Then, she was transferred to Thong Nhat General Hospital in Dong Nai that same night.
Based on the patient's story, doctors at Thong Nhat General Hospital in Dong Nai diagnosed the patient with poisoning from mushrooms growing on cicada pupae, so they performed gastric lavage and administered IV fluids to the patient. Currently, the victim is no longer vomiting or having stomach pain.
Ms. N.'s son was transferred to Dong Nai Children's Hospital. In addition to the above symptoms, the patient also had nystagmus and slow reflexes. The patient also had his stomach washed and underwent treatment for mushroom poisoning.
Quick view 8pm: Panorama news on June 7
On the evening of June 7, speaking with Thanh Nien reporters, the leader of Dong Nai Children's Hospital said that after having the patient's stomach washed, his condition was stable.
Cicada pupae lie deep underground, when they reach adulthood they emerge, molt and become cicadas. However, many cicada larvae are attacked and parasitized by fungi, then the fungus grows outside the pupae. People who eat cicada pupae with this fungus often get very serious poisoning.
