People in Dinh Ban commune (Thach Ha) harvest clams on alluvial grounds near the estuary.

In 2023, Mr. Duong The Vo in Tan Phong village, Dinh Ban commune (Thach Ha district) was one of the most successful clam farmers in the region. Thanks to his farming experience, beautiful farming grounds (4 hectares wide near Nam Gioi mountain), and favorable weather, the clams grew quite quickly and suffered little loss. Up to this point, Mr. Vo's family has harvested 60 tons of commercial clams of 80 - 90 pieces/kg, generating revenue of 650 million VND, creating jobs for 4 local workers.

Mr. Duong The Vo - Director of Dinh Ban Aquaculture Cooperative said: "In 2015, realizing that the clam farming model is very suitable for local conditions, the initial investment cost is not too high, does not require much labor, and is less risky than other farming subjects, I decided to invest in this mollusk farming model. After that, many neighboring households followed suit and established Thach Ban Aquaculture Cooperative. Currently, the Cooperative has 20 members, farming 60 hectares of Cua Sot alluvial land, producing about 600 tons, reaching a production value of about 6.5 billion VND and farmers have a profit of 40%".

Thanks to favorable farming conditions and good breed selection, this year, 9 members of Loan Hoan Seafood Farming, Purchasing, Import-Export Cooperative (Thach Chau Commune, Loc Ha) have farmed more than 750 tons of commercial clams. Despite the difficult market and lower prices than last year, the cooperative still achieved a revenue of about 8.5 billion VND and a profit of nearly 3.5 billion VND.

Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Loc Ha district, Nguyen Dinh Thanh, informed: “This year, Loc Ha district continues to lead the province in clam farming area with 169 hectares in tidal flats along the river, focusing on Mai Lam village (Mai Phu commune), Lien Xuan (Ho Do commune), Lam Chau (Thach Chau commune) and Xuan Hoa residential area (Loc Ha town). According to estimates, the output of commercial clams sold by Loc Ha aquaculture farmers in 2023 is about 2,000 tons, with prices ranging from 10-12 million VND/ton, bringing in a revenue of more than 22 billion VND”.

People in Mai Lam village, Mai Phu commune (Loc Ha) go to the clam farm to harvest clams when the tide recedes.

In recent years, mollusk farming areas have paid more attention to technical processes, improving the soil in the farming grounds after harvest, and proactively protecting the environment. Along with that, mollusk farming households in Ha Tinh have paid more attention to selecting breeds, increasing stocking density, strengthening protection against diseases and weather, so productivity is increasingly high... Thereby, contributing to maintaining a stable and sustainable production rhythm, for high economic efficiency.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy - Head of Aquaculture Management Department (Ha Tinh Fisheries Department) said: In 2023, the mollusk farming area will reach 4,234 hectares, accounting for more than 15% of the brackish water aquaculture area, with a farming output of 3,550 tons (equal to 104% of the annual plan), with a production value of about 53.3 billion VND. Mollusk farming has low production costs, people mainly focus on investing in farming grounds, rafts, breeds and labor, not having to invest in feed, so it brings high profits.

"Currently, in the area, more and more households are getting rich thanks to clam farming. Many effective clam farming cooperatives have become bright spots in production, promoting hunger eradication and poverty reduction, creating jobs on the spot, and building new rural areas in localities... Typical examples are Loan Hoan Aquaculture, Purchasing, Import-Export Cooperative, Hung Thuan Aquaculture Cooperative, Thach Ban Aquaculture Cooperative..." - Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy added.
