Specifically, at 3:45 p.m. on September 30, the Hanoi Food Safety Department received information about a food safety incident involving some students at Binh Minh Secondary School, Sinh Qua village, Binh Minh commune, Thanh Oai district, Hanoi.
Hanoi Food Safety Department coordinated with relevant units in the area to investigate and monitor, with the following results:
Binh Minh Secondary School, Sinh Qua village, Binh Minh commune, Thanh Oai district, Hanoi has a total of 1,037 students, the school does not organize boarding meals.
At around 1:20 p.m. on September 30, at the school gate, a group of strangers distributed free Boncha honey tea with peach oolong flavor to students of Binh Minh Secondary School, of which 263 students drank Boncha honey tea with peach oolong flavor.
At 2:36 p.m. the same day, student NHH (class 6A, 12 years old) had symptoms of abdominal pain in the navel area and nausea. The school took her to the Commune Health Station, then transferred her to Thanh Oai General Hospital.
By 10 p.m. the same day, Thanh Oai General Hospital received 12 patients with the same symptoms; headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting from Binh Minh Secondary School. The patients were diagnosed with food poisoning.
Currently, as of 9:00 a.m. on October 1, 13 students (including 1 6th grade student; 7 7th grade students; 5 8th grade students) are in stable health and are expected to be discharged from the hospital at 5:00 p.m. on October 1, 2024. No new patients have been detected.
Through investigation of related foods, it was found that the products the students used were Boncha honey tea with peach oolong flavor, volume 450ml. The label has the following specific information: product of UNIBEN Joint Stock Company, No. 32, VSIP II-A, Road No. 30, Vietnam - Singapore Industrial Park II - A, Vinh Tan Ward, Tan Uyen City, Binh Duong Province, Vietnam, production date: September 22, 2024, Expiry date: September 22, 2025, self-declared number: 01/UNIBEN/2024 in accordance with QCVN 6-2:2010/BYT;
In addition to the above product, there is also C2 water with pink guava and passion fruit flavor, volume 450ml, product of URC Vietnam Co., Ltd., No. 42 VSIP Tu Do Avenue, Vietnam - Singapore Industrial Park, An Phu Ward, Than An City, Binh Duong Province, Vietnam.
Products are manufactured at: URC Vietnam Co., Ltd., Factory 1: No. 26, Road No. 6, Vietnam - Singapore Industrial Park, An Phu Ward, Thuan An City, Binh Duong Province. Factory 2: No. 42 VSIP Tu Do Avenue, Vietnam - Singapore Industrial Park, An Phu Ward, Thuan An City, Binh Duong Province.
By 6:30 p.m. on September 30, 2024, the authorities had collected 234 bottles of Boncha honey tea with peach oolong flavor, 2 bottles of C2 water with pink guava and passion fruit flavor, of which 98 bottles had been used; the remaining 136 bottles were unused. The district's interdisciplinary inspection team sealed and handed them over to Thanh Oai District Police.
The investigation team took 2 samples of the above products and sent them to the National Institute for Food Safety Testing for testing. The test results are not yet available.
Regarding this incident, the Food Safety Department requests that localities, schools, and medical facilities continue to monitor and supervise the health of students, detect new patients, and report according to regulations.
In addition, units should step up propaganda to the community and parents about the knowledge of using products of unknown origin. When children show signs of suspected use of unsafe food, they should immediately go to a medical facility for examination.
In addition, the units continue to implement the contents according to the functions and tasks in Plan No. 3527/KH-SYT dated July 30, 2024 of the Hanoi Department of Health on the topic "Strengthening food safety control in and around school gates in Hanoi".
