TPO - Instead of large iron fences that reach as high as pedestrians' knees, in recent days the bicycle-only route along the To Lich River (Hanoi) has been removed and replaced with new, lower barriers.
Because the old iron fences have high walls and are installed at a high density, it is difficult for cyclists to access the route. To overcome this limitation, in recent days, the road maintenance and repair unit of the Hanoi Department of Transport has replaced the fences with lower and more sparse ones. |
This makes it easier for cyclists to access the dedicated bicycle lanes and passengers to use the city's public bicycle system here. |
There is enough space between the barriers for cyclists and pedestrians to move into the lane. This type of barrier is about 30cm high and 60cm wide. |
"The old fence was so complicated and high that every time I passed by here, I had to carry my bicycle over the barrier. Elderly people and children could not carry it over. Now the lane has been installed with low barriers, making access to the road easier and more friendly," said Mr. Nguyen An (Trung Hoa, Cau Giay), who often travels by bicycle on the road. |
Pedestrians and cyclists use the route with ease. |
However, in many sections other motor vehicles such as motorbikes and electric motorbikes still enter the route. |
There are signs prohibiting cars and motorbikes at both ends of the road and at the entrances and exits, but some motor vehicles still deliberately enter, and there are even cars parked, occupying the access to the walking and cycling paths. |
According to Ms. Dang Minh Anh (25 years old, Cau Giay), since the new barrier was installed on the road, more and more people have come to cycle and jog. However, Ms. Minh Anh is concerned that the new barrier will not be able to prevent motorbikes and electric vehicles from entering this lane, which poses many risks and dangers. |
After more than 2 months of piloting, the first bicycle lane in the capital has initially shown its effectiveness. The number of people using public bicycles and walking on this route is increasing day by day. However, the public space and environment are not civilized and clean enough to exploit properly as a public service street. |
