To help students, parents, and schools in Hanoi prepare early for the 10th grade entrance exam starting from the 2025-2026 school year, the Department of Education and Training has announced the structure and format of the 10th grade entrance exam, which will assess students' abilities in the following subjects: Vietnamese language and literature, mathematics, foreign languages; history and geography; natural sciences; information technology ; and civics.

Please see the complete sample exam papers for all 7 subjects HERE.

Of the 7 subjects tested, 2 were essay-based: literature and mathematics; 5 were multiple-choice: foreign language; natural science , history and geography; civics; and computer science.

The Literature exam has a time limit of 120 minutes and consists of two parts: reading comprehension and writing; the Mathematics exam also has a time limit of 120 minutes and consists of 5 questions.

The multiple-choice exams consist of three parts. Part 1 includes multiple-choice questions with four options, from which only one correct answer is chosen. Part 2 includes true/false questions; each question has four parts. In each part (a), b), c), and d) of each question, the candidate must choose true or false. How to calculate the score for each subject

Regarding the scoring method, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training stipulates a 10-point scale and calculates scores for each subject as follows:

Literature subject: Reading comprehension section 4 points; Writing section 6 points.

Mathematics: Mathematical reasoning and argumentation (3 points); mathematical problem-solving (4.5 points); mathematical modeling (2.5 points).

For multiple-choice exams: In the multiple-choice question format (Part I), each correct answer earns the candidate 0.25 points. In the true/false question format (Part II), the maximum score for a question is 1.0 point, with 0.1 points awarded for correctly choosing only one option; 0.25 points for correctly choosing two options; 0.5 points for correctly choosing three options; and 1.0 point for correctly choosing four options.

Short-answer multiple-choice questions (Part III): 0.25 points are awarded for each correct answer.

The Department of Education and Training requires schools to direct their subject-specific teams and groups to research and apply appropriate exam formats for each subject, paying attention to objective multiple-choice formats so that 9th-grade secondary school students can become familiar with them; and to increase the number of multiple-choice formats including: multiple-choice questions with 4 options to choose from (one correct answer); true/false questions (each question has 4 parts, each part being either true or false); and short-answer questions.

Strengthen the development of question banks and test matrices according to the learning objectives of the subject curriculum; prepare 9th-grade students to familiarize themselves with the orientation of the entrance exam for 10th-grade high school according to the 2018 General Education Program; encourage schools in the area to build digital libraries of test and survey questions to share with other educational institutions in the area for exchange, learning, and effective implementation of testing, assessment, and survey methods and formats.

Research and implement the use of materials in tests and surveys to ensure compliance with regulations. For literature subjects, avoid using texts and excerpts already studied in textbooks as materials for assessing reading comprehension and writing skills in periodic tests, in order to overcome the situation where students only memorize lessons or copy content from available materials.

The 2025-2026 school year will be the first year that the entrance exam for 10th grade in high schools will be conducted according to the 2018 General Education Program. The announcement of the exam format aims to help 9th grade students in the 2024-2025 school year, as well as teachers and staff in schools throughout the city, have a clear direction for organizing effective teaching, learning, and review, and to prepare well for the exam.
