On the morning of November 24, Ms. Hua Thi Xuan Lien - Chairman of Quang Trung Ward People's Committee (Dong Da District, Hanoi) said that the authorities agreed on a plan to move all the remains in Lane 167 Tay Son to Yen Ky Cemetery (Ba Vi District).
During the construction of the drainage system in lane 167 Tay Son for more than a week, the authorities discovered more than 200 skeletons lying about 1 meter underground. Due to the large number of skeletons, the construction unit had to temporarily move to the flower garden area in front of the Trade Union University.
Chairman of Quang Trung Ward People's Committee Hua Thi Xuan Lien said that alley 167 Tay Son is often flooded, even overflowing into people's houses, causing damage to furniture every rainy season. People in the alley have repeatedly petitioned the authorities to improve the drainage system in the area.
Therefore, in 2024, Dong Da district agreed to implement the project to renovate the drainage system and road surface at lane 167 Tay Son.
According to the Chairman of Quang Trung Ward People's Committee, during the construction of the drainage system, the workers discovered a number of ceramic urns, some with remains, some that had been destroyed over the years. Immediately after that, the construction unit and the Ward People's Committee reported to the district and coordinated to handle the matter according to regulations.
After completing the procedures with the funeral home, on the morning of November 24, Ms. Hua Thi Xuan Lien said that the authorities had begun the process of moving all the remains in lane 167 to Yen Ky cemetery, Phu Son commune, Ba Vi district for burial.
In response to some opinions that the above remains date back to the time when King Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue led the Tay Son army to defeat the invading Qing army in the spring of Ky Dau year 1789, Ms. Lien affirmed that the above information is false.
Quang Trung ward leaders said that through research with local people, this area used to be the cemetery of the old Thai Ha hamlet, where the deceased were gathered about 50-70 years ago.
According to local residents, this is not the first time the locality has discovered many skeletons. Previously, skeletons were discovered every time infrastructure projects were constructed, house foundations were dug, etc.
