Uyen Linh's 'The Vocalist' may be the only concert by a female vocalist this year. But should we continue to label her as a diva?

Ha Anh Tuan, a guest singer at the music night The Vocalist at Hoa Binh Theater (HCMC) on the evening of November 9, said he was "crazy" about Uyen Linh's voice. Quoc Thien, the singer's confidant, said she gave the audience "all the best" after months of preparation.

As for Uyen Linh herself, when introducing the music night The Vocalist - celebrating 15 years of her singing career, she said "she wants to write her name in the history of Vietnamese music".

To be able to be compared with the four singers often called divas (Thanh Lam, My Linh, Hong Nhung, Ha Tran), Uyen Linh still needs to build a musical direction that is worthy of her voice - a voice that musician Duong Thu once praised as "seductive".

Seniors My Linh and Uyen Linh became close after participating in the show Chi dep dap gio xuong song together last year. They both performed together, becoming a duet on many big and small stages.

Uyen Linh once said that she and My Linh are "two energies that attract each other, blend, support and burn together". Being chosen by My Linh to stand on stage together is not easy.

Uyen Linh is alone in a world

In Vietnamese music, she operates in a "one-of-a-kind" style, unlike anyone else and has her own market - audiences who like to listen to live singing, often go to tea rooms or cozy stages and love her voice.

To repay them, she also worked hard to improve her singing voice, singing nearly 20 songs live, showing off difficult techniques in The Vocalist night. Although not every performance was perfect, and her storytelling was a bit pretentious, the audience still seemed to love it.

Returning to the question "Does Uyen Linh need the title of diva or not?", only Uyen Linh can answer. Because only she knows what she needs and what she is pursuing in her music career. But this is an era when people probably no longer look for divas.

With or without this title, Uyen Linh - and Quoc Thien - are true vocalists with proven talent, but still have much to prove.

She needs one or more albums that define her musical personality, bearing her personal mark, after the 2017 album The Portrait . She needs more hits that are associated with her name, and establish herself as the best performer.

She needed a richer musical path with stories, anecdotes, and memorable moments - something that The Vocalist concert's repertoire and talk show didn't clearly portray.
