Guinean authorities announced they have recaptured the former leader of the military junta after an armed group stormed his prison and freed him.
Guinea's Ministry of Defence announced on November 4th that authorities had recaptured Moussa Dadis Camara, the leader of the military junta from 2008-2010, along with two former senior officers, Moussa Tiegboro Camara and Blaise Gomou, following their prison escape. The three were returned to Maison Centrale de Conakry, a prison in Guinea's capital.
The remaining escaped prisoner is former Colonel Claude Pivi, who has not yet been apprehended. "We are deploying all measures to hunt down the last escaped prisoner," the Guinean Ministry of Defense announced.

Earlier, Guinea's Justice Minister Charles Wright stated that "a group of heavily armed gunmen stormed Central House prison and left with four defendants on trial for the September 28, 2009 attack on protesters, including former Captain Moussa Dadis Camara."
Minister Wright said Guinea had sealed its borders to prevent prisoners from escaping. "They will be found wherever they are," Wright asserted.
Camara and several others are accused of directing the military to massacre and rape protesters in a stadium in the capital in 2009. According to a UN investigation, more than 150 people died in the event.
Former Captain Camara denies responsibility, blaming subordinate units for disobeying orders. Camara has been detained since September 2022 when the case was brought before the court.
Guinea, a West African nation of 14 million people, is currently led by a military government headed by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya following the 2021 coup that overthrew former president Alpha Conde.
Eight countries in West and Central Africa have experienced coups in the past three years, with Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Gabon maintaining military rule.
