According to Reuters news agency, Mr. Kobakhidze will hold the position of Chairman of the ruling party from 2021.

He is known for his eloquence and has responded to harsh criticism from the West and Ukraine with statements expressing the country's desire to join the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Last month, former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced his resignation to give his successor time to prepare for parliamentary elections in October.

Both figures are widely seen as loyal to billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgia's richest man, former prime minister and founder of the Georgian Dream party.

Polls show Georgian Dream remains the most popular party, but has lost ground since 2020, when it won only a narrow majority in parliament.
