Greenwood has failed to maintain his impressive form at Marseille. |
After Marseille's heavy 0-3 defeat to Monaco last weekend, two former French players, Jerome Rothen and Christophe Dugarry, attacked Greenwood and head coach De Zerbi. Speaking to RMC Sport , Rothen commented: "Everyone is responsible. We had high expectations for Greenwood and Hojbjerg, but they are just average players."
Greenwood had a disappointing performance in round 29 of Ligue 1 on April 13. At home at Stade Louis II, Monaco showed their superiority over Marseille. This defeat caused Marseille to drop to 3rd place in the Ligue 1 rankings. This was also the 4th loss in the last 5 matches of coach Roberto De Zerbi and his team.
Foot Mercato newspaper gave Greenwood 3/10 points, Le Phoceen even gave Greenwood only 2.5 points with the comment: "A lackluster match from the former Manchester United player, who contributed almost nothing to the team at Louis II stadium".
Meanwhile, former French international Dugarry also expressed: "Benatia (Marseille sporting director) is the person I blame the least after the defeat against Monaco. De Zerbi is the one who is mainly responsible. The board did everything to make him successful. He was seen as a savior, but brought nothing! Players like Greenwood were over-praised, and now have returned to their true value."
Marseille are in crisis, making their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League slim, even though they were previously considered a strong candidate to challenge Paris Saint-Germain for the throne.
If the situation does not improve, De Zerbi risks losing his coaching position next season, and Greenwood may also have to find a new destination.
