On the afternoon of October 26, hundreds of soldiers, militiamen and people in Thuan An ward (Hue city) were still standing in the rain reinforcing the coastline in the Hoa Duan dam area - an area that was seriously eroded and eroded before storm Tra Mi made landfall.

Previously, this area experienced unusually serious landslides and coastal erosion even though there had been no heavy rain or strong winds.

This is also the area where 25 years ago a sea gate opened, sweeping an entire village out to sea after the great flood in Hue in 1999.

Thua Thien Hue province has declared a state of emergency due to natural disasters in this area. On October 26, serious coastal erosion continued to occur in the Hoa Duong dam area, posing a risk of reopening the sea gate after 25 years.

Hundreds of soldiers from the provincial military command, the border guard command, and militia and self-defense forces were mobilized to this area to build a breakwater and urgently limit landslides before storm Tra Mi made landfall.

Seeing the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers wading in the cold rain to build dikes to help people, people in Thuan An ward (Hue city) pooled money to buy bread, banh loc, oranges and mineral water to give to the soldiers and militia.

More than 300 loaves of bread, thousands of Hue-style banh loc cakes, oranges and 4 barrels of mineral water were bought by the people together to give to the soldiers.

Ms. Dao Thi My Phuong (46 years old, resident of Thuan An ward, Hue city), said that seeing soldiers standing in the rain to help people made her feel so sorry that she didn't know where to put it all.

"So the women living near Hoa Duan dam discussed pooling money to buy bread, banh loc, mineral water and oranges to give to the soldiers to help them regain their strength," said Ms. Phuong.

The hot bread and sweet orange segments, which were imbued with the love between the army and the people, made the officers and soldiers here feel very excited. Some officers and soldiers who were busy on duty were invited by the women who braved the rain to bring oranges and bread.

Senior Lieutenant General Tran Van Nhat, Military Command of Thua Thien Hue province, said he was very touched by the affection the people had for the soldiers and dike-building forces.

"During our mission, the people provided the soldiers with bread and water to ensure their health and to complete their mission well. That is the sentiment, showing the solidarity between the army and the people in all situations," said Mr. Nhat.

Colonel Phan Thang, commander of the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Military Command, said that in recent days, more than 2,000 officers, soldiers, border guards, and local militia have been working hard to build dikes to prevent landslides in the Hoa Duan dam area.

"We are trying our best to protect people's lives and property from natural disasters. The unit has also prepared human resources and equipment to be on standby, ready to support and rescue people in emergency situations before, during and after storm Tra Mi," said Mr. Thang.
