According to BGR , Google's software update support policy for the Pixel 8 series includes providing upgrades, new features, and security updates. This move comes after criticism from many users who felt Google hadn't supported their older devices, something Apple and Samsung do much better. Notably, the first Pixel line only received 3 years of support, leaving users of those Pixel phones missing out on all the features and improvements that Android and Google regularly add.
The Pixel 8 series is guaranteed to receive software updates for up to 7 years.
This isn't the first time Google has adjusted its commitment to software updates. When launching the Pixel 6, the company set a new standard with a five-year support commitment after release. However, in reality, Android updates only last for three years, while security updates continue for five years.
The clear benefit of this new standard is that Pixel 8 owners will no longer feel compelled to buy a new Pixel phone every three years to take full advantage of the Android operating system. Without the ability to update to the latest Android version, the device would look very different from more modern devices. Besides new features, security is another important component of the update.
Extending the duration of software updates is increasingly important because smartphones are not only repositories of personal data but also serve as payment cards, bank accounts, and social media accounts, making them vulnerable targets for hackers.
