“I understand that it is very difficult to pass such a measure because there is too much opposition from countries that depend on the remaining gas,” an EU diplomat was quoted as saying.
The official noted that the 11th package of sanctions is “almost complete” and “applying this massive measure at this time would not be effective.”
In early May 2023, the European Commission (EC) confirmed that it had sent a proposal for the 11th package of Russian sanctions to EU members.
EC President Ursula von der Leyen called on the 27 EU members to take trade measures against countries that help Russia evade the bloc's sanctions.
Recently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the next round of sanctions against Russia is being discussed by the EU and will not target nuclear energy.
Mr. Peter Szijjarto emphasized that Budapest would agree to this proposal of the EC, if it was a decision of each country.
