New perspectives on contemporary art

Thanh Canh 2023 will feature 6 artists from Vietnam and Scotland (UK) including Hoai Anh, Trung Bao, Ly Mi Cuong, Luong Minh, Sholto Dobie and Inge Thomson.

The reason the program chose these artists is because their art and identity contain many highlights, many potentials for development and are different from their peers of the same generation. These are contemporary music artists who are experimental, multimedia, interdisciplinary, and want to cross the boundaries between genres.

Thanh Canh does not have a board of advisors and guides, but is developed based on the idea of creating a multi-dimensional experience space. It is a space where international artists and new artists in Vietnam will work together, share and criticize each other's work process.

Thanh Canh 2023 consists of two phases, taking place in June and September 2023. The series of events includes activities: sound fieldwork, thematic research workshops, audience development programs, open studio events where artists will share ideas for developing works, and a program to introduce completed works.

Phase 1 (June 11 - June 23, 2023): Develop a diverse dialogue between artists from different generations, cultures and disciplines, around the theme of habitat and traditional artistic heritage. The work will focus on the creation, collaboration and development of indigenous materials, to expand the diversity and development potential of traditional art in a globalized context.

Phase 2 (11/9 - 23/9/2023): Will take place after 3 months of work. During this phase, artists will share about the process of making their works and their experiences. Guest experts will give feedback and provide additional information to complete the ideas. The curatorial board will select the most potential works to introduce at the Counterflows Festival (UK) in 2024, to introduce and continue to bridge the possibilities of indigenous Vietnamese art to the international region.

Thanh Canh 2023: A new perspective on contemporary art - 1

Thanh Canh 2023 Cultural and Arts Initiative aims to provide potential Vietnamese artists with opportunities to learn, create and develop.

Thanh Canh 2023 Cultural and Arts Initiative is initiated and organized by Len Ngan, co-organized with Counterflows (UK) under the auspices of the British Council, within the framework of the UK/Vietnam Season 2023 program; with support from the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Faculty of Communication and Foreign Culture - Diplomatic Academy, A/C Project, The Fly On Dust Media House, Xplusx Studio, OUR.hanoi; with the accompaniment of media partners: 84Noise, Co Dong and Dunkare Magazine.

The programme encourages the creation of new works of art that inspire us to ask questions about the relationship between humans and their environment. From ecological landscapes, social environments to indigenous heritage, Thanh Canh invites the public to reflect on how landscapes act as a canvas on which ideas and concepts associated with the term ‘modernity’ are constantly expressed.

Thanh Canh hopes to bring new perspectives on contemporary art, build a long-term connection platform for art practice, thereby searching for innovative and interdisciplinary works of art.
