So, when the last group of students transition from the old 9th-grade curriculum in the 2023-2024 school year to the new 10th-grade curriculum in the 2024-2025 school year, will there be any difficulties? This is a matter of great concern for parents and students as their children are about to enter 10th grade.
First and foremost, to be admitted to their desired 10th grade, students need long-term preparation. Acquiring and accumulating knowledge and skills for the exam is crucial. Typically, the three subjects chosen by many localities are mathematics, literature, and a foreign language; therefore, students have already prepared for these three subjects from the moment they enter junior high school.
Furthermore, preparation isn't just about knowledge; it also includes other factors like health. Focusing too much on studying isn't necessarily a good thing. It's more important to scientifically balance studying and relaxation. When necessary, activities can be broken down and prioritized to avoid impacting productivity and health. Imagine preparing for high school as a marathon – a constant, ever-changing race with no easy stop, so establishing a reasonable plan is essential.
According to the new general education program, high schools, when designing and constructing subject combinations, must base their choices on the orientation of subject streaming and closely follow the actual situation based on the available teacher resources and facilities of the school. Each student, after graduating from junior high school, always has a direction for themselves based on their individual abilities, career guidance from teachers and parents. Therefore, students must determine their goals when registering for subject combinations from the 10th grade to avoid having to change their preferences in subsequent years.
Starting from the 2022-2023 school year, the 2018 General Education Program has been implemented in grade 10.
The 2006 General Education Program heavily emphasized one-way knowledge transmission. In contrast, the 2018 General Education Program focuses on developing students' qualities and competencies. The differences between the objectives and requirements of the old and new programs will inevitably cause difficulties and confusion for students entering 10th grade in the 2024-2025 school year.
Therefore, first and foremost, teachers should guide students on how to choose subject combinations that suit their abilities, interests, and future career aspirations. Besides the four compulsory subjects at the high school level: mathematics, literature, English, and history, teachers need to provide specific guidance on choosing other subjects as prescribed in the curriculum . Choosing the right subject combination will give students clear motivation and goals for their studies. Conversely, choosing the wrong combination may lead to missed opportunities for future career guidance, making learning difficult and resulting in unsatisfactory outcomes.
Subject teachers should also allocate transitional time to help students become familiar with the new curriculum's learning methods, actively support and encourage students to explore knowledge through various channels, proactively accumulate knowledge, and be creative in searching for and processing information to meet the learning objectives.
