On April 18, Mr. Le Xuan Hien - Director of the Hydrometeorological Station of Kien Giang province - confirmed that this morning, the change of season rains caused a large tornado phenomenon in the Phu Quoc sea area.
At around 9am, the sea area of An Thoi ward (Phu Quoc city) was covered with dark clouds. After a short while, rain appeared and especially a large waterspout appeared. Local people used their phones to record the waterspout scene and shared it on Phu Quoc's online community.
According to Mr. Hien, during the transitional period and the beginning of the rainy season, thunderstorms and lightning often appear in many places, including the coastal area of Kien Giang. Due to the hot weather, when it turns to rain, authorities predict that thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning will occur more frequently and more strongly.
"People need to brace their houses and proactively trim trees around their homes, parks and along traffic routes. They need to proactively reinforce billboards to limit falling and causing property damage," Mr. Hien recommended.
