On the morning of May 31, in Thuy Hai commune, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Thai Thuy district to organize a workshop "Introducing and developing traditional salt products of Thai Binh province in 2023".
Attending the workshop were leaders of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development, the Institute for Natural Products Research and Development, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thai Binh and Nam Dinh provinces, and more than 100 salt producers of Dai Dong Cooperative, Thuy Hai commune.
Currently, the salt production profession in Thai Binh province is only left in Thuy Hai commune (Thai Thuy). With an area of nearly 39 hectares of salt-making land, of which the production area is more than 4 hectares, the fallow area is nearly 34 hectares. The whole commune has only 75 households participating in production, achieving a salt output of 484 tons/year. Salt products in Thuy Hai are made according to the traditional method of the North, which is to permeate salt water through sand, so the salt retains many vitamins and minerals of the estuary, is rich in alluvium, has a light salt concentration and more than 60 trace elements that are beneficial to human health, and can be used as medicine because it has all the ingredients of 12 types of tissue salt. The special thing about Thuy Hai salt making is that it is not only a traditional profession but also associated with the relic "Lady of Salt" in Tam Dong village, Thuy Hai commune. Every year, on the anniversary of her death (April 14th of the lunar calendar), Quang Lang villagers, Thuy Hai commune hold a festival, in which there is a performance of "Mr. Dung and Mrs. Da dance" - this is one of the oldest dances of the Vietnamese people, imbued with agricultural rituals associated with unique fertility beliefs. Therefore, preserving the profession of producing sand-dried salt, in addition to its economic significance, is also the preservation of a multi-generational craft village, preserving the traditional culture of the cultural and historical relic of the Lady of Salt Palace.
Delegates visit Tam Dong salt products.
The workshop presented the current status of salt production, processing and consumption; the limitations and difficulties in maintaining the current salt production, in which the labor force participating in production is mainly people outside of working age, moreover, the salt production profession depends entirely on nature, especially the qualifications and capacity of the cooperative management staff have not kept up with the requirements of innovation in organization, management and grasping policies to support the development of salt production, processing and consumption. In order to improve the quality and output of salt for the people, the workshop proposed solutions on investment in technical infrastructure, salt production linkage, product development and trade promotion. This is also the direction for sustainable salt development in the coming time.
