Opening in the cheerful key of A major with strings and brass, Dvorak's Carnival Overture will kick off the evening. Written in 1891, the piece is the second part of a romantic trilogy: "Nature, Life and Love." With its cheerful and lively melody, the piece evokes the bustle of a carnival scene - crowds, hawkers and what Dvorak describes as "a pair of lost lovers."
Next up is one of Mozart’s most famous violin works – the Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major. Written in 1775 when he was just 19 years old, it marked the beginning of his maturity as a composer and contains countless musical treasures including memorable lyrical melodies.
His works have a profound resonance and leave an indelible mark on countless music lovers. The Violin Concerto No. 3 is no exception, a concerto that enhances the dexterity in the use of technique and the sharp expression of emotional flow, and is a symbol of Mozart's creativity and musical talent.
Unlike the previous two works, Shostakovich's music is melancholy, rich in soul and depth, Dmitri's Symphony No. 5 in D minor written in 1937 will close the concert.
What makes Shostakovich's music great is the seamless blend of modern techniques and traditional beauty. The massive four-movement symphony has a complex structure and a deeply tragic tone, influenced by the music of Mahler, the great symphonist of the post-romantic era. It is a musical painting depicting the struggle for freedom and human liberation.
Movement 1 begins with a harsh fugue that follows a tense and somber march rhythm; Movement 2 is embellished with the bass of the strings and then passes through the timbre of the remaining instruments; Movement 3 is more gentle and sparkling between the duet of flute and harp; the lively melody takes the lead and becomes resounding at the end of Movement 4.
