A video recording the scene of a teacher at a kindergarten in Paris beating a 3-year-old child has caused outrage in France.
The video shows a little girl standing next to a fallen chair crying. Meanwhile, the teacher violently pulls the girl into a corner and hits her on the back. Terrified, the girl runs to another corner of the classroom and sobs.
Immediately afterwards, French Minister of Education Nicole Belloubet investigated and affirmed: "These images shocked public opinion and are unacceptable in the French school system."
Authorities have temporarily suspended the teacher and are working with the school to investigate the incident.
The video was recorded by a parent at the kindergarten on September 3 and shared on social media. The video quickly went viral and shocked the public. The family of the 3-year-old girl realized that their child was the victim in the incident and took legal action through a lawyer.
The girl’s family’s lawyer said the teacher had been beating her before the incident was recorded. The lawyer also said the teacher acted more gently than usual because she knew there were parents outside the classroom. The question is, how would a teacher normally treat her young students when it was just her and her students?
The girl's family has now filed a complaint with the local police over the abuse their daughter suffered at school. The girl's family stressed that their daughter had suffered "severe" psychological damage after only a few days of school after the summer break.
They took their daughter to see a psychologist for an assessment and were told that the girl had been traumatized by the events at school. She now has a fear of adults, avoids communication, and does not want to look adults in the eye. In particular, the girl does not want to talk about school and teachers.
Philippe Goujon, the mayor of the 15th arrondissement where the kindergarten where the controversy occurred is located, said the teacher who committed the offense was a senior employee of the school. She had worked at the school for about 10 years and was in her 50s.
"The teacher has a good understanding of school regulations, is friendly with parents and has experience in the job. According to the school, the teacher usually behaves in a standard manner and rarely lets emotions overwhelm her. Previously, she has never been reported for inappropriate attitudes and behavior in the classroom," said Mr. Goujon.
When working with the kindergarten's board of directors about the controversial incident, the teacher did not offer any explanation to defend herself.
